This one caused a 'Lewis Black' knee-jerk reaction: A sputtering stammering profanity-laced "What the hell is wrong with you people?" mental tirade.
State/county/city governments use unspent covid money to establish reparations committees. $5 million in Tennesee and $10 million in Rhode Island.
We borrowed trillions for covid relief. A lot was left unspent. In the coffers but unspent. Instead of doing the responsible thing and returning the unspent monies to reduce the borrowing debt, local governments are scrambling to find ways to spend it.
So now, reparations study is deemed covid-related? This is nuts.

A few more minutes of mental fuming and I found a way to blame this idiocy on Democrat liberals. It's tangential to the issue of the OP—but it does 'circle back' and, in a way, mitigate the negativity relative to non-scheming Democrat liberals, aka non-politicians and non-political forum-type folks. ;-)
A common rationale for government deficit spending relies on belief in the Modern monetary theory (MMT ); that a fiat currency nation can create whatever money it needs because the 'down the road' time to balance the books can always be pushed 'further' down the road by creating more economic activity by spending more money, aka just printing whatever you need.
I recall, from years ago, there was a pretty good thread on MMT here. It's one of those 'looks good on paper but doesn't work in the real world' things.

Exactly, use that money to reduce the national debt. Reparations is a non-issue. Slavery happened LONG AGO-it is past. Reparations is a waste of time anyway. There is far too much spending for things that I deem wasteful & nonsensical. Besides using that Covid-19 money to reduce debt, what about cutting useless social programs such as welfare by at least 80%.
This is so wrong on so many levels, I could write a book. However, I just know if share my true thoughts on this. I would find myself banned.
