'The House Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday approved, along party lines, two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas -- teeing up a floor vote as early as next week to impeach the embattled Biden official.

The committee voted along party lines to approve the two impeachment articles, which accuse Mayorkas of having "repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security" and of having "made false statements to Congress" that the border is secure and closed and that DHS is in operational control of the border. The articles will now go to the House where they will be voted on the House floor.

Republicans spent the hearing emphasizing their case against Mayorkas, pointing to record high border crossings, with the record for monthly crossings having been broken in December, and mass releases of migrants into the interior along with narrowed interior enforcement. They accuse Mayorkas of not following immigration law, which they say demands the detention of illegal immigrants, and of failing to secure the border.

"My colleagues across the aisle, seem to say that it's acceptable that we've had 10 million illegal crossings in three years and we've had pushing 300,000 Americans dead from opioid overdose. We're losing our country down there. And the man responsible for executing that policy is Alejandro Mayorkas," Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., said.

Mayorkas brought this on himself with his handling of the boarder crisis.

House Republicans fail to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

A monthslong GOP campaign to oust Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas collapsed in the House on Tuesday after Democrats and a trio of skeptical Republicans voted to reject a resolution to impeach him over his handling of the southern border.

The vote was 214-216, and marks a stunning blow for Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Republicans who have blamed the Biden administration for record migrant crossings and made border security a central campaign issue.

"The Republican-led House on Tuesday night impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over what they say is his failure to enforce immigration law at the southern border.

He denies that as partisan and "baseless" and Democrats argue the historic impeachment is a political ploy.

It marks just the second time in U.S. history a Cabinet official has been impeached, after William Belknap in 1876.

"The articles of impeachment against Mayorkas passed 214-213, with the majority made up of all Republicans and three Republicans voting with Democrats against impeachment. Two Democrats and two Republicans did not vote.

"Alejandro Mayorkas deserves to be impeached, and Congress has a constitutional obligation to do so," House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a statement. "Next to a declaration of war, impeachment is arguably the most serious authority given to the House and we have treated this matter accordingly."

Johnson blamed Mayorkas for "fueling the worst border catastrophe in American history."

Mayorkas will now face a trial in the Democratic-controlled Senate, where a two-thirds majority vote will be needed to convict and remove him from office, which is very unlikely to happen. The chamber's majority leader, Chuck Schumer, on Tuesday night labeled the impeachment a "sham." Please read on.   https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/house-r … =107158284
