AARP Exclusive: Presidential Candidates Talk Social Security, Medicare and more by AARP (Oct 2, 2024)
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump discuss the issues important to older Americans

    https://www.aarp.org/politics-society/g … ssues.html

    The questions asked are:

** Millions of older Americans are struggling with higher prices on gasoline, rent and other essentials. If elected, what will you do to combat high prices?

** The Social Security trust fund is expected to see a shortfall in about 10 years. If Congress doesn’t act, millions of Americans who are counting on Social Security may see cuts to the money they’ve earned. If elected, how will you protect Social Security for the future?

** Our own AARP research shows that 48 million American family caregivers provide $600 billion in unpaid care each year, helping loved ones live independently in their homes rather than in costly nursing homes. If elected, how will you support family caregivers, many of whom are juggling work and family?

** Millions of American workers have no way to save for retirement through their employers. If elected, what steps will you take to help American workers save for retirement?

** Americans pay some of the highest prescription drug prices. If elected, what will you do to bring prices down?

** Moving on to Medicare for a moment, Medicare provides critical health coverage for older Americans. If elected, how will you protect Medicare from benefit cuts, and how might you improve the program?

** Americans over the age of 50 continue to pay the highest health care costs. If elected, how would you ensure that older Americans have access to affordable health care?

** We know older workers often face age discrimination when getting or keeping their jobs. If elected, how would you combat age discrimination and help older workers who need or want to continue working?

** Many Americans, especially in rural areas, do not have access to high-speed internet. How would you ensure that Americans have access to affordable high-speed internet?

** Criminals who perpetrate fraud through spam calls and texts target older Americans, resulting in the loss of billions of dollars of their hard-earned nest eggs. If elected, how would you reduce fraud like this?

** If elected, what is the most important thing that you could do to help improve the lives of older Americans?

    Whoa . . . Hold your horses . . .

Fact-checking Harris and Trump’s interviews with AARP by PBS News (Fact check originally appeared on Politifact)

After AARP published interviews with Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, a PolitiFact reader noticed that the organization did not fact-check the candidates’ responses.

The presidential candidates spoke by phone with Robert Love, vice president and editor-in-chief of AARP Publications, in late August. On Oct. 2, AARP published the Q&A’s, in which each candidate was asked the same questions, focused on inflation, Social Security, Medicare and drug prices.

To serve our readers, we fact-checked some of the candidates’ claims: . . .
