I am extremely curious. I hear all the time that "Americans are Dumb" but I hear this from fellow Americans. If we all think the population is dumb, what does that make us? Everyone tells me "you are one of the less than 2% of thinking Americans" I don't think so. If I am, then the 2% exist around me all the time, at the grocery, at work, in my parent's neighborhood, on Hollywood Blvd.... I dunno people, perhaps it's because we are the MOST SELF HATING nation in the world. We have no loyalties to our brothers and sisters.... Well that's my 2 cents... what's yours?

    Are Americans dumb?

I would prefer to have Arizona choosing their own way than being told what to do by the Federation. THAT is American.

I think that 'naive' would be a more appropriate description of most Americans. Naive, because we have a tendency to believe that somehow, some way, 'things' will fix themselves. The term, 'EGBOK' comes to mind. (Everything's Gonna Be OK). Perhaps 'apathetic' would be another appropriate description.. since, most Americans are content to sit back and wait for 'things' to fix themselves. ??

We're an arrogant bunch, if nothing else. I don't think Americans are dumb. I think people say that because they don't agree with something; be it who got elected in a particular race, or they perceive that popular opinion doesn't agree with them. Dumb, to most people, is simply irritation that  other people don't see things their way.

I can't disagree more, Americans are Apathetic, yes, but arrogance implies that we think we have it all together when we don't. Americans in general talk more crap about each other than any other country.... We call ourselves all kinds of things, but we lack unity. Sad.

I love my fellow Americans, even some that are liberals! They're the best people always willing to help others in need, to give their time and money to charities. And yes, most are smart and hard working which is why I get so angry when our government steps out of bounds and wastes the resources they steal from us! The only real dumb Americans I know are the liberals that think giving the government more of thier money is a solution to our problems. There's just no help for people that don't know when someone's hands are in their pockets!

Liberal is such a weighted term. I think the sectioning of our people, based on comments such as "Liberals lack understanding" is what divides us. We are all saying the same thing, just in different ways, based on different fears.

No. Liberals don't know what they're saying. We're divided by people that want freedom from people that don't, liberals.

Again, the title is what divides us, the smartest thing that the gov can do is divide us. A house divided against itself will not stand, and further... it's easy to control

Thats true! John Locke the father of liberal thought who Jefferson respected so much he inserted his ideas into the declaration of independence, would be considered a conservative today!

Not dumb just well fed. You need to be a little bit more hungry for an extra initiative big_smile. You are too used to have everything ready made - just put into the oven for 10 minutes... When life does not work that way, then moaning and complaining starts... Same here in Canada. We like a good life but we do not want to work too hard. But easy times are over for everybody. Now you have to abandon your sofa and TV, and do something. That's terrible, that's a disaster! Do I actually have to use my brain? - Sorry, I can't, it hurts so much!

Some of the "hungriest" countries on the planet are also the laziest. And some of the best-fed ones are also the most innovative. And I'm not even thinking of the US in either of these cases.

I hate to be the one to say it, but THIS IS WHY people think America is dumb. We start to discuss the wording instead of the meaning! COME ON! Check the attention span and STAY ON TOPIC! Who the HELL cares what we call ourselves or other people, the point is PAY ATTENTION to THE POINT! Eh

Speaking from across the pond, we love the Yanks! lol but seriously, when we see America on TV, the majority of you come across as lovely, and I mean lovely! you are bound to get a few jerks we do over here, but the one thing I will say about Americans is that they are usually so optomistic. If the English get stuck at an airport for a few hours, we moan and groan and blame every body else, but the yanks just say, 'oh well never mind we had a good vacation!' so yep, on the whole you are all upbeat. There are a few places that we have seen that show, how can I say it? a lack of worldwide knowledge! but to be fair I think its because they don't need to know, they live by the beach, its hot, and they have money! so I don't blame them really!

I think average is not able to be measured in the case of people. We're all so different as far as environments, genetics, education, expectations. With such a large country, some Americans never have traveled abroad, or even out of their state. Travel definitely broadens the mind. My own personal opinion - I think Americans need more exposure to arts and cultural events. Who wants to sit around and fight about politics all day and go home and watch tv all night?

expand the mind, average is boring.

Well, average is boring in any country. if you do not want to be average - get up and do something - not average, not what averages are doing or  to call you dumb will be an insult to the dumb people...
Eat, sleap and ...complain - you do not need brains for that.
Average American eats too much and too often. That's a fact.

I think people around the world eat too much, except for where they don't eat at all. I think that I would check out my own reflection before I started trying to say that about other people. I live in Hollywood, everyone here is underweight, people like yourself would be considered HUGE and trust when I say, even the men are afraid of their ever expanding waistlines.... I think the DUMB is that we take abuse from people that, are from other countries and stand united. Where as we go, um yeah, your totally right, we are fat and lazy. Truth being, everyone in the US says Americans are fat and lazy, but they themselves are American...
