Who do you think has been the best president in American history and why?

Abraham Lincoln, hands down because he preserved the union and freed the slaves. He was clearly a genius. Nearly all historians rate him number one. Then Washington, FDR, Jefferson and so forth.

"George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin D. Roosevelt are consistently ranked at the top of the lists. Often ranked just below those three are Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt. The remaining places in the top 10 are often rounded out by Harry S. Truman, Woodrow Wilson, Dwight Eisenhower, and Andrew Jackson. The bottom ten often include Warren G. Harding, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, William Henry Harrison, Millard Fillmore, Ulysses Grant, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Richard Nixon. Both William Henry Harrison (32 days) and James A. Garfield (incapacitated after 119 days) died shortly after taking office, and are therefore sometimes omitted from the rankings as a result. It is not clear if their lower quartile rankings are meant to show that they are considered "poor" performers or rather that they have no record by which to rank them any higher." [Wikipedia]

I think Jefferson was the most interesting - a real "Renaissance man." Lincoln was a great president because he kept the nation together.

Jefferson was awesome until he became president.

Ronald Reagan was the best, of course that's just my opinion. Lincoln was a tyrant and too many people hold him in high regard simply because he was assassinated.

Interesting thoughts about Lincoln.  I've never heard the "tyrant" argument before.  What is your opinion based on?  Why do you consider him a tyrant?

William Henry Harrison.  His term was the shortest.

George Washington, because had he taken the power that was offered to him our country would probably have a very different face by now.

No doult that George Washington  was the greatest  equal only to Abe Lincoln....one created  and sacrificed  for our beginning , the other kept it from splintering into many nations.

I think Reagan was certainly the best president we've had in the last 100 years.  I think the job he did was first rate.  I certainly would never want to run for president, but of all of the U.S. presidents the ones I would least want to be are Lincoln and JFK.  I think they had the toughest job under the most stressful circumstances.  It's not surprising that they were both assassinated.  They both stood up for what they believed in the face of intense opposition.  George W. Bush was dealt a very tough hand but nothing like what those guys faced.  That's my opinion.

The early presidents were the best.  Dope smuggling, atheist and seperatist.  Pretty much the complete opposite of what america is today.
