An estimated 200,000 war veterans are homeless in the US. With another million soldiers on the way home from Iraq and Afghanistan in the next five years, even the country's top uniformed military officer Admiral Mike Mullen has warned America is at risk of repeating the mistakes of Vietnam by creating a "whole new generation of homelessness". Unemployment among recently returned servicemen and women is three points higher than the already disastrous national average of 9 per cent.
