End of a Love Affair

Updated on May 30, 2013

End of a Love Affair - in Song Titles

Stories about love and love affairs usually fascinate me. Second to Lee Child mysteries, that is. Quotes about love are among my favorites. Like this quote from Rita Rudner: "Before I met my husband, I'd never fallen in love. I'd stepped in it a few times."

So I got to thinking about how many songs have been written about being in love. and how many have been written about breaking up - the end of a love affair. Literally hundreds.

So I said to myself, "Self, I bet you could write a story using only song titles." Of course, I took the challenge. Here is my story about the end of a love affair written by using only published song titles. There are only two characters in this story: the BOY and the GIRL.

BOY: Be my love!

GIRL: Let me go, lover!

BOY: I just called to say I love you.

GIRL: What's love got to do with it?

BOY: I can't stop loving you.

GIRL: Will you still love me tomorrow?

BOY: Make love to me.

GIRL: Stop in the name of love.

BOY: Love will keep us together.

GIRL: (You are a) Part time lover.

BOY: Baby, I need your loving.

GIRL: You've lost that loving feeling.

BOY: This guy's in love with you.

GIRL: You give love a bad name.

BOY: All you need is love.

GIRL: (You know) 50 ways to leave your lover.

BOY: How am I supposed to live without you?

GIRL: I'll never fall in love again.

BOY: Breakin' up is hard to do.

GIRL: Why don't you do right?

BOY: Love and marriage?

GIRL: I would do anything for love, but I won't do that!

Favorite "Song" Cartoons

Did I capture the poignant drama of the end of a love affair? Did the song titles do the job?

Here are some of my favorite love quotes to put a smile on your face and a sparkle in your step. Share them with someone you love.

"You have to walk carefully in the beginning of love; the running across fields into your lover's arms can only come later when you're sure they won't laugh if you trip." ~Jonathan Carroll

"Love is the word used to label the sexual excitement of the young, the habituation of the middle-aged, and the mutual dependence of the old." ~John Ciardi

"Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired ." ~ Robert Frost

"Infatuation subsides, so make sure the other person is someone who can stand you." - drbj

"Love means nothing in tennis, but it's everything in life." ~Author Unknown

"To the world you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world ." ~Author Unknown

"You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving." ~Author Unknown

You are swift, Rachel. The ink has hardly dried on the hard copy I printed of this hub to submit to the Pulitzer Prize committee.

Thank you for the 'awesome' and appreciation of my using the song titles to tell the story. No thanks necessary. The pleasure was all mine.

It felt to me more like girl dangerously playing hard to get. But that's the beauty of a creative piece of writing...when done well, we get to bring our own experiences, and thus connotations, to the words. Super idea! I'll bet that was fun to do.

Don't thank me for an enjoyable read. I need to thank you for such sublime statements. I am delighted that you love my writings, my sometimes debatable sense of humor, my genius thoughts and so forth.

Great idea! And as I was reading the song titles, I was thinking you'd end with 'Love Stinks'. But maybe that's not the title of that song...

Hi, sheila. Thanks for enjoying my great idea. 'Love Stinks' might not have been a bad way to end this. Hum a few bars so I can see if I know it.

Delighted to see you here, Becca, and that I provided a laugh for you. I don't believe for a minute that you cannot sing well. You are a Renaissance woman!

Everything you do, Drbj, you do with flair. This was no exception!

I loved the "title story", but even more so, the pearls of wisdom from authors mostly unknown. My favorite was, of course,

"Infatuation subsides, so make sure the other person is someone who can stand you."

I wonder who the genius was who thought of that one? :)

I love this! And your quote about infatuation is so true -- I used that kind of logic in choosing my husband. :)

Oh, Sue, thank you. I love the 'flair' word.

I knew, of course, that the little story and the love quotes would appeal to you and especially, the infatuation quote. One of my favorites, too. :)

Hi, Ivorwen, good to see you here. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods. Thank you for loving this hub.

And you were wise to use the 'infatuation quote' logic in selecting a mate. Works every time. Elizabeth Taylor swore by it.

Of all words, the word "love" appears in more song titles than any other.

      This quote:

"Love is the word used to label the sexual excitement of the young, the habituation of the middle-aged, and the mutual dependence of the old." ~John Ciardi

I hope that is not ALL it is but I have to tell you that quote hits the heart of an amazing truth.

Thank you for this excellent Hub. I enjoyed it. Great idea. Always the creative one you are.

I'm so glad, James, not only for your visit which is always much appreciated, but that you saw the truth in that perspicacious quote by Ciardi. He did hit the nail on the head.

Thank you for enjoying this hub and the lovely 'creative' comment.

That was a fun hub. It reminded me of those musical interviews that DJ's use to put together using lines out of songs...all the rage at one time. Thanks for sharing! WB

Thanks for visiting, Wayne, it is always my pleasure to hear from you when you are not out in the corral busting a new mustang. Horse, not auto, that is. Delighted you enjoyed this hub.

Hi, Sun-Girl. I do hope you really meant 'reading' and not 'dreading.' That would certainly be dreadful. :)

      Dr. BJ,

Ha-Ha on the song. Tre cute and totally witty. :)

I dislike romance novels, but if the writer manages to toss in a bit of adventure with them, it helps me endure the read. So far, Diana Gabaldon is pulling this off nicely for me to the point that I've even re-read some of her work.

As for me, I've stepped in it, waded in it, rolled around a time or two in it, and ... a whole lot of stall mucking going on when it's over.

However and on the bright side ... hope springs eternal. :)

Thanks for visiting, Femme, and finding this cute and witty. I have tried to read romance novels but unless they are mysterious or focused on serial killers, I seldom finish them.

I do love your way with words ... 'stall mucking,' you say. Sounds enchanting. Fortunately hope does spring eternal and love makes the world go round ... and round ... and round.

      Dr. BJ,

I'm sorry to be the one to ruin your fantasy, but ....

stall mucking isn't even remotely enchanting, lol!

I know, I know - just trying to rise above it all. I think it was Rodney Dangerfield who once said: "Be sure to take care of Number One, and do not step in Number Two."
