Online Dating Photo Tips

Updated on July 17, 2008

Online dating can be a really great way to meet someone, but people need to realize that it's a form of advertising, and *everything* in your profile factors in to whether or not someone decides to contact you, or reply to one of your own emails. I've done articles on the main profile photo, so I'm not going to get into that right now. This is more about those extra photos people add.

Yes, definitely, you should have more than 1 photo available. Ideally, you should probably have 3, so your potential date can get something of a 3D feel for you. But that doesn't mean you should just toss any old photo up there. Quite the opposite, in fact. I'm addressing this to men, because I don't check the female profiles out, but these things apply to everyone.

Bad Photo Ideas

1. Too Sexy For Your Shirt

See that photo up there of The Hof showing off his body for the camera? Yeah, well, a chick striking that pose might appeal to men, but anything like that in a dating profile would make me click 'next' without bothering to read anything else. Amazingly, I see LOADS of these types of photos in dating profiles. Yes, you have a nice body, and yes, I might enjoy seeing you walk around sans shirt, but seeing that in your profile makes me think you ain't nothing but a player -- and few women want to be someone's game.

2. Pics With Other Women

I have mentioned this before, but it's so prevalent I have to say it again. Do not show pics of you with other women. It will not make us want you more and we will probably assume that's someone you had a relationship with at some point. We are catty creatures -- we don't want to see this, even at this early stage. And cropping her out makes it even worse, particularly when you can still see that 80's Hair of hers covering your shoulder.

3. Pics of you with, um, props.

It's great to be kinky, but I don't want to see your toys in your photos, ok? And I really don't want to see you pretending to use them on yourself or others. I once saw a photo of a guy holding a plastic sheep. I'm sure it was funny at the time, but on an internet dating site it looks a bit creepy.

4. Glam Shots

I want to see you in your natural state, so please no 007 posing. It makes you look like a tosser, frankly, and who wants to date one of those? It also makes me wonder how different you look in real life. I've recently seen pics of men posing on the beach, standing there in a towel, making strange kissy faces at the camera -- this may turn some women on, but they're unlikely to be anyone you'd want to date.

5. Old Pics

Don't fill your profile with decade-old pics, unless you look exactly the same now. It's that simple really.

6. Pics of everyone in your family.

Close to your peeps? Great. But save those 30 pics of mommy until you've scored a date -- all you're doing in the meantime is making us think you're a Mama's Boy.

7. Self-portraits via your phone.

You look like a man in a fishbowl. It's not sexy. Please don't include these.

8. Self-portraits via your computer.

These can look good -- mostly they don't. If you're going to use your computer camera to take a pic, for God's sake, PRACTICE with it first. Don't just take your first attempt and put it online.
