If a person wants something bad enough they'll generally find a way to (make) it work. Whenever the two people met it had to have been during the time when one of them was in "their element". It's only afterwards that you discover that meeting was a random exception because one of you would not normally have been up at that time. :-)
It's natural to be fascinated with someone that is completely different from you. However those same differences later on often become the wedge that drives the couple apart. Opposites may attract in the short run but like attracts like for the long run. If you usually want to go right and your mate wants to go left then you are asking for "drama, arguments, and fights". The number one cause for divorce and breakups is and always has been (selecting the wrong mate). People that share the same values, want the same the things for the relationship, and (naturally agree) on how to obtain them usually make a better team.
