Why can't people let go of past mistakes that you have made and see you for what you are now?
Why should it be of any significance as to what people see you as? What is important is how you see yourself, having buried your past mistake behind you, and then the question is, the things which you buried behind considering them your mistake, were they really a mistake, or did you bury them because people told you so and not you want your supplicant behavior to be acknowledged. If it is your independent assessment which defined it as mistake that you rectified than your pleasure with yourself should be your end.
