How is one supposed to react when a friend introduces you to his family as his best friend?
Yet you never had a clue you were at the top of the hierarchy?
well, you could just say, "... he's been a great friend to me too, and I'm so glad to get the chance to meet you all" or something to that effect.
That way you don't have to pretend like you were best buddies all along, since you clearly had no idea he felt this way, but it still shows your liking and respect for him as a friend.
