I realize that everyone has different sets of friends and that not everyone is going to get along.  But how do you deal with the friend of a friend who literally makes you want to tear out your own ear drums so you dont have to listen to them dribble on and on about nonsense?

Take the high road . . . if they're that bad, pity them. After all, it might not be worth alienating the friend that you have in common.

ignore them....or dont make it a habit to be around your friends when that individual will be there

Coming from a small town this is difficult for me to relate to, since just about everyone knows everyone else. However, sometimes people like that require lots and lots of patience, and sometimes they require you to tactfully (stress on the tact!) tell them that you're not really interested in whatever subject they're going on about. Being truthful doesn't have to be brutal, and sometimes it's the only way to get rid of or find a way to get along with annoying people.
