What do you do if someone takes your photo with their phone in a public place without permission?

I was on a public bus yesterday. The man across from me held his phone out in front of him and appeared to be taking a photo of me! I was completely creeped out! I did nothing and just ignored him. What should I have done? What is a nice way to broach the subject just in case he didn't take a photo?

In a public place, anyone can take a photo of what they want, when they want.  How much a public bus is 'public' is debatable, if the owners have made no regulation for the taking of photos on their vehicles, then it is open season.  That is how photography in the UK is legislated - no one has the automatic right to privacy.

Unfortunately since you were in a public space there's nothing you can legally do to make people not take photos of you. This has been the case long before cell phone cameras. If you were at the beach, for example, anyone could take a snap - either accidentally or intentionally. The only time you can legally complain is if he's stalking you - that's a whole other can of worms. Otherwise you can cover your face or ask them not to take a photo. I'm afraid that's all there is...

My husband suggested that I cover my face. Wish I had thought of it at the time.

To my knowledge it's not against the law to take pictures in (public). Even if it were the guy could claim he was taking a picture of something behind you.
I suppose you're glad that you aren't a famous celebrity!
