I kinda did go for someone who wasn't like me at all. I'm tall, my wife is very short. I like heavy metal music, she likes country music. I love horror movies, she loves romantic comedies. Somehow, we make it work.

A friend of mine once said: Opposites attract divorce attorneys! :-)
I can't see myself going for someone who did not have similar interests as myself. To me that's more important than age, race, or religion.  Although no one wants to marry their mirror, it can also be said: No one wants to wake up to World War III everyday either!
"There is no amount of (work) or (communication) that can overcome being with someone who does not want what you want."
If you want to go right and the person you are with wants to go left then you're setting yourselves up for drama. Opposites may attract in the "short-term" but relationships that succeed long-term usually have a high (compatibility) score or share the same values/priorities.
