Why has he gradually distant himself from her?
He had a female friend and had fallen in love with her. After marriage he had stepped away from this female friend. This man has fallen in love with the friend and decided to step away. His distance sounds helpful to him but the friend misses his good company and is not in love with him. He is not in love with his wife. Is he afraid of showing his true feelings for his female friend?
If one can't have what they want it's natural to focus their attention on what they have and make the most of it.
He may not be "in love" with his wife but his wife (is there for him) in ways his "friend" never was or never could be.
There is no upside to being around someone who does not feel the same way about you as you do them.
Acceptance of these facts leads one to moving on.
