Apparently, the Gru actor at Universal Studios was fired because he dared to flash the "OK" sign with his fingers, while taking photos with a kid.

    I'm dead serious.   https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nat … 791483002/

So what are your thoughts? Is giving the "OK" sign a valid reason to fire someone?  Please discuss.

We don't know if it was only the OK sign that got the actor fired.

"We can’t discuss specifics about this incident, but we can confirm that the actor no longer works here."

But yes, the OK is used by white supremacists and recognized as a hate symbol. Does that mean every time a person gives the OK sign is being a racist? No.

"However, since the hand gesture has many different meanings, Beirich says context is key and it's difficult to pinpoint a hate symbol if there isn't information about the person who's doing it. "

Not at all. However, I heard that it is offensive in Mexico as it is considered a sexual hand gesture.

And therein lies a major, major problem.  If we actively search for something to be offended about we will find it.  When we assign offensive meanings to ever gesture or word possible, we will be offended.

If, on the other hand, we question whether offense is intended and excuse whatever we can as either ignorance on the part of the offender OR our own, if we assume that people don't mean offense instead of assuming they do, we will all be a lot happier and the world will be a better place for all.

Demanding that the rest of the world snuggle in and fit within our own prejudices and language (word, body or other) is senseless and damaging to all.

I used this OK sign and never intended, they were my white brothers.

A gang of KKK can set up their shop on a street corner and express their hate toward most members of the human race. At worse,  if there is an up roar,  they just ask them to leave.

    Funny world we live in.
