The effect of Backsliding

Updated on July 17, 2013

The name Saul is borne by three men in the Old Testament and one man in the New Testament .

The best known Old Testament figure called Saul is the first king of Israel. Saul whose father is Kish was a man of Benjamin, handsome, who stood head and shoulders above other men.

He was chosen by God to rule as King over Israel (I Samuel 10:24).

BACKSLICDING: This is the act of abandoning one’s faith and disobeying the instruction of God. According to (Rom 14:14a) the backslider in heart shall be filled with his own way.

First he disobey God’s commandment which says go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.

Instead they destroyed the people of Amalekites, brought their king (Agag), their spoil, sheep, and Oxen.

They claimed that they will sacrifice them to the Lord at Gilgal. That is an act of rebellion stubbornness which the bible compared with the sin of witchcraft and idolatry respectively (I Samuel 15:23)

Again Saul rent the skirt of Samuel the priest when he refuses to return with him.

According to Samuel Saul has rejected the word of the Lord and the Lord has also rejected him from being King over Israel.

EFFECT OF BACKSLIDING:

Like every act of disobedience, backsliding has serious repercussions.

After the death of Samuel, the Israelites were to go war with the Philistines, and Saul inquired of the Lord to know how to handle the war for he was afraid of the Philistines.

The Lord did not answer him because he has backslidden.

For Saul to get an answer which he needed so much because of the impending war, he sort the services of a woman with familiar spirit, who invoke for Saul the spirit of Samuel to help him find solution to his problem.

The spirit of Samuel told Saul that the Lord has rent the kingdom out of his hand and has given it to his neighbor which is David.

That the Lord will also deliver him and Israel into the hand of the Philistines, that he and his sons will be killed the next day in the war.

Backsliding is a serious offence in the sight of the Lord our God. The act of Luke-warmness is a form of Backsliding which the Lord said that he will spite out such people. (Revelations 3:15-16).

Today God is calling every backslider to comeback as stated in the book of (Jeremiah 3:14a) “Turn, O backsliding children, said the Lord”.

Take advantages of this call today, turn to the Lord and you shall be restored.

As Romans 1:28 confirms, backsliding results in reprobate behavior. We cannot turn our backs to the Lord once we have gained knowledge of Him. King Saul's unusual behavior when the Spirit was taken from him, the need for David to soothe him, was part of his reprobate standing. Peace
