I would say that the answer is literal and figurative, but it is not the body that dies and is reborn but the spirit is literally reborn. The immaterial part of man that reasons and moralizes is reborn. It is figurative because the body does not die nor is it reborn at this particular time but the body has to wait until the resurrection. Good question.
