Why is the virgin birth so important?

Because it equates the mythical story of Jesus to other "saviors" of the time.  It attempts to set him apart and claims a miraculous event.  A "virgin" giving birth, like many other aspects of christianity, are very pagan in origin.

It is important because all through Biblical history, Israeli women asked for a son.  Not one time in the Bible did any woman ask for God to give them a daughter.  Jesus was not born from the seed of a man.  To have been of the seed of a man, He would not have been able to do the work that He did.  He was born of a virgin woman and of the Holy Ghost, which is of God.

Because it was fulfillment of prophecy.  It’s important because it tells us that Jesus was different from anyone else who’d ever been born, or ever would be born. He wasn’t just another human being; He was the divine son of God, sent from heaven to save us from our sins.

Because it was easier for the Greeks and Romans to accept a religion where the god comes down from heaven and impregnates a woman, who gives birth to a divine human. The Greek, Egyptian, and Persian myths were full of such stories.

Because it goes against nature. A virgin cannot have a child because she has never had sex. Yet the Bible says it happened.

Because it is evidence of the what we think of as "supernatural," (though our perceptions in this world are sub-natural, that is, lacking the full spectrum of possibilities). We see only what we are conditioned to see, and this event opens the door to greater vistas.

The orthodox idea is that the Virgin Mary was virgin before, during, and after giving birth, that Jesus birth was totally outside of the "normal," thought it is also eastern orthodox belief that Jesus was born as all of us would have been born had it not been for the fall from Paradise.

We see and accept only a fraction of the possibilities around us, and so we limit our growth and experience. There is a wide universe out there. Be open to it.
