Because they don't want to know the meaning of sin.

We are going through such economic times at present that financially at least for some, we are living just above or below the poverty level so we pinch every penny we can. Also some rightfully think that if they donate to a charity outside the church it is the same thing. It is. Titheing simply means to give to charity to the needy, because obviously it is not going to God in person, He doesn't need it.

SteveoMc, if someone does not tithe, it is not a sin.

Torconstantino, i believe people donate straight to the needy instead of giving it to church. Either way I think it is helping people so I think that is okay.  I would especially recommend this if your preacher gives themselves a big salary and life in a big house.
