As christians are we obligated to vote in elections? Is there scripture to support your position?

This question prompted by movielardatadare. Just curious if voting or not can be backed by scripture. Or is it just a preference?

I would say it is a preference as the phenomenon of voting wasn't the way government was handled 2000 years ago.

As a Christian I am concerned about the state of our nation so it may be my civic duty to vote, but I am not sure how someone could relate that to Scripture - though I am sure someone could come up with something.

I don't believe that we are forced to have to vote in elections.  Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's.  If a Christian wants to vote, he or she can.  After all, we have to pay taxes as well.  And if we don't want to vote (such as myself), we don't have to.  I pay taxes.  Ergo, I will still criticize policies and say what I want to whenever I please.  To vote or not to vote is a preference.  Let's face it.  None of the 10 Commandments say "Thou shalt vote."

Hi movielardatadare. I hear you. But don't you think by not voting, it leaves the possibility of the one that is obviously against the things of God to win? Thanks for your time.

The Bible says we are to pray for our leaders. It does not say we are obligated to vote for or against them in elections. Vote because it is your right  in  a free society not because someone falsely claims your salvation may somehow be  attached to your civic duty. There are reasons why an election year cycle is referred to "The Silly Season"!

Ps. 11:3 "If the foundations are destroyed, what can the [unyieldingly] righteous do, or what has He [the Righteous One] wrought or accomplished?"
The foundation of this country is the ability to choose one's elected officials.  If a Christian is interested in righteous leadership he or she should vote for candidates that would represent righteousness as elected officials. Otherwise, there are unrighteous folk  in office, no matter how much prayer goes on.

Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's. Voting is a civic responsibility.

But also, we are told to love our fellow man as we love ourselves. If voting could help, then do it.

In America, the elections have become a farce. Electronic voting machines have become rigged. In 2000 national election, one Florida voting machine had -64,000 votes (minus!). How can you get minus votes?

In the 2012 GOP primaries, there were multiple cases of fraud -- ballot stuffing, changing votes, ignoring votes and breaking rules -- all to get Romney elected and to silence the competition (especially to silence Ron Paul supporters). Check out YouTube "Reality Check" with Ben Swann for lots of video evidence of this. At the RNC, Ron Paul delegates were stripped of their credentials. One rules committee member who disagreed with what was going on never made it to the rules committee vote because the bus driver taking him (and others) wouldn't stop at the convention until the voting was over. Disagreements and vote challenges were ignored at the RNC. In fact, the voting was scripted allowing only for affirmative votes, so the chairperson could only say, "The ayes have it." That was the script.

So, at this point, prayer is likely the best option, at least in the presidential election. Though I might vote for a 3rd party candidate.

Voting will not keep God's judgment from prevailing.

    1st Samuel chapter 8, verse 7 says:
"And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them."

Instead of looking to God for answers, we try to solve the problem ourselves... By voting. Well, what did God have to say about all this "government" nonsense?

Same book and chapter, verse 18:
"And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day."

Basically God is saying here, "Okay, fine. You want to solve things your way, go ahead. But when trouble comes, let your 'king' save you! Don't come crying to me."

Only God can save this country, and voting doesn't fulfill the requirement under The Great Commission of Christ. In fact, it is like people are more willing to pawn off their personal responsibility to serve God, by voting for "someone else" to take care of our problems.

It just isn't going to work, and the end result is always the same: God's rebellious children, go through tribulations and trials, and into the captivity of foreign lands for not heeding His call. What good is a vote?

I Peter 2:13-15 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors...
Would be easier to submit to someone I had a say in leading me, but if not then... I Tim. 2:1-3 Pray Thanks

Nothing in the bible or in civil law says I have to vote. I only have to be submissive to government as powers appointed over me, and voting doesn't change the book of Revelation, does it? We can't change what is coming.
