A papal conclave is the gathering, in the Vatican, of all eligible members of the College of Cardinals for the express purpose of electing a new Pope. The cardinals are cloistered for the entire period of the conclave - never leaving the Vatican until a Pope has been elected. No outside communication is permitted.
