typically it's determined by the number of followers.  Nothing more.

A real 'Cult' is an organization that seeks to control their followers through Subliminal Mind Control.

Subliminal means beneath or below the level of conscious awareness.

Mind Control is composed of various techniques of using Hypnosis that lowers awareness, and takes control of a followers money, power, work, position, or prestige, etc.  to subvert it for the use of the leadership of the 'Cult' under the guise of political, religious, or as a philosophical front.

A Religion is the attempt to discover spiritual truth under the guise of or through Spiritual Revelation

Formal Religions eventually and invariably have become corrupt seeking Wealth and Power, formalizing their practices as Dogma and Ritual called Traditions.

Spirituality is the beginning of all religion.  Spirituality is not Religion!

We as physical Human Beings - are Spiritual Beings having a Physical Learning Experience.

Learning about our nature as Spiritual Beings - is what Truth (Reality) is all about.
