What is the significance of religious institutions in the History of Israel?
It's probably the same for every country whose citizens believes in God.
Religion gives people the strength to endure difficult times. Believing in Heaven or an afterlife also makes it more bearable to accept death. Therefore if a group believes they are the "chosen people" victory is assured. It's just a matter of time. This kept their spirits up throughout while dealing the various rulers. Prophesy kept them going.
In early civilizations there was very little difference between religion and government run states. Even today they are fairly intertwined with one another. In America we (say) we believe in "separation of church and state".
However it is very unlikely that an admitted (atheist) would get elected president. The same could be said for electing a president who considers him or herself to be Muslim. Bibles are used to swear elected officials into office. Our money states: "In God We Trust"
