   Why does the Bible threaten us?
   
   I read the Bible and it is full of threatening words. If you don't believe in Jesus and accept him as your Savior you will go to hell. If you kill someone in self defense you will go to hell. If you steal a crumb of bread when you are hungry you will go to hell. All these threats, WHY?

   Fear is fearsome motivator, especially to those who lack individual strength. Consider a child who is misbehaving. "Your going to get a spanking  if you keep that up" and "If you do not believe in god your going to hell."  Please explain the difference here, other than one is a child and the other an adult or are both treated as children?
   All theistic beliefs are the same, fear, guilt and reward.  An all-powerful, all-knowing god creates an inferior life form,  us, so that a test can be conducted that he already knows the end result.

      Please ask your own question. Correction, all false beliefs are the same. Matthew 7:13"Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it."

      fit--Even the devil will quote scripture for his own purpose. Is that what you are doing? If not, how am I to believe you--because you say so?

      You are correct, the devil does quote scripture for his own purpose. I'm quoting scripture as plainly as it is written. cjhunsinger, do you want truth or do you hate truth and want to disprove it?

   The Bible doesn't have any threats. It's God's Word and has many warnings. A threat is something that may or may not happen. A warning is much more serious. To start, you live to please either God or Satan. You've made your allegiance clear. If you want a serious answer ask a serious question. The first warning was to Adam and Eve. Genesis 2:17 "but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die". When they disobeyed God, they were immediately cut off spiritually. Fast forward. Jesus was and is God's Son. Not only did He take on a cross that He didn't deserve, but He endured mocking, torture, and unbearable shame. Before going to the cross, He was grieved and said Luke 22:42 "Father, if it is You will, take this cup away from Me, nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done." There is no other way.
   
   The warning is that unless you repent and believe in Jesus Christ, you will perish in hell. The fact that you're able to read this is proof of God's mercy. He could take you at any moment if He chooses, yet He's patient and wants you to come to repentance.
   This is not blind faith I'm talking. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 "Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee."
   
   You could start with reading God's Word and asking Him from a sincere heart to reveal His word to you instead of standing with the rest of the mockers. Romans 10:17 "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

      How about "you won't go to heaven if you do not accept jesus as your personal savior'? Is that not a threat?

      fit2day-Life is a short exercise in breathing, it is such a waste to spend it in fear and guilt. Theism is akin to living under a constant threat of war.

   first , it is clear you do not have a correct understanding of scriptures.
   2nd-   there is no  threat, there is an explanation and a summary .    God created the heavens and the earth and therefore has the right to set the rules to live there in His world.
   3rd-- you also must not know that the old testament has been fulfilled and no longer the law in God's world.   We live under the new testament.   And Jesus was willing to die in our place so that we may have eternal life FOR FREE, all we have to do is accept His gift.   You must admit it sounds differently when properly stated instead of the attack you made.
   4th-  there is NO scripture that says there is a death penalty for a killing in self defense.   In fact the opposite is true because self defense is NOT murder.
   5th- please show me valid scripture that says you go to hell if you take a morsel of food when hungry-- there is not one.   
   Those that like to attack Christianity can , like those false christians, find scriptures to twist to make their point but it does not change what is truth.
