To what, who, and to where do you go to for comfort?
Some seek out alcohol and drugs to get confort, some seek out money and material riches, others are hoping to receive comfort from their religious leaders and the like. Where or who do you look to for real comfort in your life?
Generally the first ones I turn to are my Gods, and when I pray for things like comfort, strength, patience, guidance, etc. they never fail me.
Next I would look to the people in my life-- my husband has been an incredible support for over 20 years, he is always there for me. My mother, my children, my friends. And my dog, who is up for cuddling as long as I need it.
Minor comforts on bad days are always a nice thing-- I don't drink or do drugs or anything and I live kind of modestly, but a warm bath, favorite PJs, an old favorite book or movie, a cup of hot cocoa or some mac & cheese, etc. is always nice.
But first and foremost I go to my Gods, my faith, the people in my life.
You are such a positive person. I appreciate that about responses. Tell me please, you say you have many "Gods" or more than one God. Who or what are your Gods and do they have names? How did you come to have many Gods?
Thank you SCP (if I may abbreviate your name, lol). My religion is Wicca, it's a Pagan polytheistic religion. I believe there are many Gods, and I have a personal relationship with a few specific ones. What the are? They're Gods, lol.
Yes by all means you may use SCP lol! No problem. Very interesting. Do your Gods each represent something or have a particular quality about them? I have never heard of your religion before. Does your religion have its own Book of laws?
We have liturgy, not scripture. We have tenets and ethics, not laws. It is an orthopraxic religion, rather than orthodoxic or revealed. The Gods are divine beings, and yes, they have their own unique 'personality' about them in my beliefs.
My family first and foremost, especially for anything serious.
For less pressing issues I dive into a book or favourite tv show/movie.
Family is always a good source of comfort during hard times. You are very fortunate. Reading a good book or watching a favorite TV show or movie can certainly take your mind off minor problems. I find that voluntarily helping others is comforting too
I tend to introspect first. So I guess in some sense, I go to myself first. I try to break the issue of difficulty down from different angles, see what I could have done differently, and try to disentangle myself from the expectations, insults, or general negativity of the other people who might be involved.
Then I would go to a close friend and my partner to vent and get that warmth of companionship.
If it is a loss though, I greatly struggle talking to anyone.
Where do you go for comfort?
I go to Jesus Christ to receive comfort. Whenever I am in need of Jesus Christ to comfort me, I call upon His name, and He comforts me.
I seek comfort in food and my teddy bear
ALthough I am a mother of two, I still have the same crave for chocolates and ice creams when I am sad , I also talk to my teddy bear when I have bad dreams, when I can't tell anybody my secrets, teddy is always there for me
Your experience with your teddy bear, reminds me of the character of the Peanuts cartoon, who keeps his "security" blanket with him. You are not by yourself. No doubt others have a "comforter" in stuffed animals and the like. And yes food can be too.
We are social animals and would seek out friends. I guess that they do not really help, but can act as catalyst, to help us to understand what's really going on. I mean that the answer is already inside and will eventually come from us, but a kind or wise word may bring it forward.
Ultimately, Prayer begins when human capacity ends, when the friend/s cannot help us. So prayer, singing, being in solitude...talking to Something Higher is a last and significant effort. At this point it most certainly helps because we are then recognising that there is no such thing as 'free will'... that we are powerless before God. Every Soul has this moment.
