    Not really. We can do things in our life which may make a certain outcome more likely, like going to college, a culinary school, etc., but life happens. You could lose a limb in a freak accident or suffer from cancer, even though you always ate the right things. Maybe a friend betrays you somehow...or a child dies...
    In the end, the only thing we can control is our reactions to the things that happen to us. If we can do that, then we can at least manage our feelings, and thus be better prepared if life takes a turn for the worst, through no fault of our own. Thus, even in hard times, we will have a certain amount of hope and calm.
