Your brain is operating, but at half power?  Something like that?

Some parts of the brain shut down, other parts are more active.

I dream for a living. Most people have no idea how powerful your subconscious is.

At maximum a human can use up to 10℅ of their brain. Imagine all that 90℅ white matter of your brain and what it is actively doing.

We HAVE to have rem sleep, or we go nutso or even die. So for some reason, they are necessary. why?

Perhaps dreams are a way the mind/brain processes thoughts, feelings, and fears...inhibitions are released, there is an unrestricted and unrestrained free flow of processing and without that pesky thing called a conscience, to boot. That may explain, at least somewhat, why they (dreams) can be weird. The mind, while sleeping, gets to stretch its "legs" or limitations if you will, that are imposed upon it on a day to day basis by a multitude of things. Societal, family, religious, self expectations, etc.

Dreams are necessary for the mind to have an "escape" perhaps?

If you understand how the mind works, there is a good chance you will understand your dreams better.

People flip the brain and mind as the same thing. The mind is far larger than the brain, so understanding the mind is more beneficial.

You can go beyond and study your three brains. Your mind brain, your heart brain and your gut brain.

      I'm not questioning mind skills.
It just there so much we don't understand what the brain is capable of doing. The heart brain is like your EQ or emotional intelligence. The gut brain keeps the total body functional for survival.

I spend a great deal of time analyzing my dreams. They are so weird and cool. I've come to the conclusion it is nothing more than a process of the brain shuffling experience around. Putting it into long term memory, dumping some information it determines useless, pushing some into the subconscious for later evaluation, etc.

I have determined the bizarre portions to be the effect of the nature of the process. Information passing other information, and the part of the brain processing the dream combines it all into something interesting. To stave off the boredom of having to work while the body rests.
