There are different levels of junior organized sports and in my opinion the very first level should not keep score. This is the level where you help the youth discover an interest in the sport, where s/he learns the rules of play, how to be part of a team, how to listen to a coach and behave outside of the home.
I use to coach youth baseball and started with T-ball and I can tell you at that very first level the kids didn't care about the score.... They did ask all the time, "are we winning" or "did we win?" I would tell them that they won the moment they became part of the team.
At the next level, they learn about competition, and sportsmanship and that is when it is appropriate to learn and accept a more deeper connection to the sport and that mush include keeping score.
At the first level, score is more important to the parents than it will ever be for the kids, because after the game, all the kids want is their treat.
I agree with you. Kids need competition. In trying to preserve their "self esteem" we are actually weakening it, by not allowing a competitive game.

Is there a good way to teach your child to be more aggressive in sports?I'm curious if there are coaching techniques to teach kids how to be more aggressive when playing sports.

Do you feel that organized sports is too highly stressed in American society these days? Why or why not?

What kind of adults will kids who are organized-sports-enthusiasts grow up to be?Both watching and learning to play organized sports is stressed, from day 1 of school onward (and, I suspect most of the time, parents stressed it before kids started school, too, if only by example). Will kids grow up...

Dear friends of Hubpages, which I do adore,I find it rather sickening the way the profile scoring erratically bounces up and down. Is this done on purpose, have your blogs here suddenly devalued because you were sick one or two days, or had to take care of family, or have a job responsibility?Two...

Do you think sports team members celebrate too much when they score a run, goal, etc.?I see baseball players point to the sky to thank God when they get a base hit, a player gets high fives from all his teammates when he scores a run even if it resulted from an out, hockey players acting like they...
