What kind of adults will kids who are organized-sports-enthusiasts grow up to be?
Both watching and learning to play organized sports is stressed, from day 1 of school onward (and, I suspect most of the time, parents stressed it before kids started school, too, if only by example). Will kids grow up feeling no sole personal responsibility for anything except that they "tried" (i.e. failed)? At the same time, our kids get fatter and fatter like the rest of us, and their grades are falling like a rock. What messages are we sending to the next generation?
I saw your other post about organized sports and it almost seems like you have an axe to grind. Having participated in sports at all levels of education I can tell you that it kept me active if nothing else. Sports also teach team work. Do I think that there are parents who are pushing sports on their kids? Absolutely. And I also feel that there are parents who push academics to ridiculous levels. I think that professional sports are drastically overpaid but I feel the same way about professional musicians, actors, and many other entertainment based professions, It is sad that we pay so much for entertainment while other professions such as teachers face pay cut after pay cut.
Very perceptive, atechwiz! A friend of mine played pro football 9 years (before today's outrageous $$) then was too damaged to play, but had no other skills. Moderation in all things and separation of sports, arts/music, and school should occur, IMO.

It is often said now adays that we as parents aren't doing such a good job with teaching our kids meaningful basics and love in life. Instead we now work too hard, have not enough time to spend with them, or just not that equiped for the whole parenting life just yet. We should really take time out...
