Why We Have Birthstones

Birthstones have been gifted to a child after it is born for centuries. Birthstones are said to protect the wearer, ward off evil spirits, have mystical properties and aid in health. The origin of the birthstone can be traced back to biblical times. The bible cites references to birthstones mounted on the breast plate of Aaron. The breast plate is adorned with twelve stones symbolizing the zodiac signs and the twelve tribes of Israel.

It was common for people to wear the stone that represented the ascending sign of the zodiac along with a combination of other stones depending on what they were trying to heal or attract with the stones. It was not until the 16th century that birthstones were worn by themselves according to the zodiac sign a person was born under. Thanks to gem traders in Poland at this time, wearing only one stone instead of many became fashionable. Birthstones are different based on zodiac sign, birth month and Ayurvedic tradition.

The modern birthstone chart was assembled in the early 1900's. The modern birthstone chart was put together by the jeweler's association. The modern chart was a way to assign birthstones based on their commercial availability to the public.
