Hot Winter Trend: Fair Isle Sweaters

Updated on March 30, 2015

I'm In Love with a Sweater!

Not to sound too dramatic and all, but this season's must-must-have is the FAIR ISLE sweater! Although these chunky knits used to have a "not-so-cool" reputation, all that has changed this season. This is no longer your old grandpa's sweater! And we can prove it to you!

How to Wear Fair Isle Sweaters

There are many ways to wear fair isle sweaters, because there are many types of sweaters out there. I've seen celebrities sport shawls, tunics, long sweaters, baggy sweaters, tight sweaters and sweater dresses! One of my personal fave ways to sport the look is a long but fitted fair isle sweater that has buttons and opens up to reveal a bright top. I would also pair the look with super tight, weathered skinny jeans and some comfy boots.

I like how easy this trend is for us "common folk", as it's very down to earth. The trend is extremely accessible and versatile for any gal and can easily be incorporated into almost any wardrobe. From the fashion novice to the fashion fearless get ready to rumble in fair isle!

Look 1: Minimalist Fair Isle

If patterns scare you, then keep the look minimal. Notice how only the bottom of the sweater contains the fair isle pattern? This look is also very clean because underneath the sweater, the model wears a crisp monochromatic color from neck to thigh; this helps balance out large knits and patterns. Remember, if your sweater is slightly baggy and loose, keep you shirt tight! Every look needs a bit of balance! And, because it's freezing out, you can't just wear a dress! Keep yourself warm with some knitted tights!

Look 2: Funk Queen

You are fearless and undaunted by colors and patterns galore! Go for a funky look with your fair isle. Find a fair isle sweater with a bright or bold color and large patterns. Pair the sweater with a miss-matched top underneath. If your sweater is full sleeved go for a vintage floral tank, or like this model, try a retro plaid pattern! Remember, with fashion almost anything goes! Because you went with two different patterns/color schemes on top, keep the bottom somewhat neutral. If, however, you've been dying to wear your hot pink leggings, go for it, and throw on a neutral top under you wild fair isle knit!

This look is for: The fashion fearless, boho lovers, and those who love to shine!

Look 3: Trendy

Wanna look like you walked straight off the runway? Go trendy! One of the trendiest fair isle sweater color combos are cream and red. Mix that up with something darker like black or go bold with pink. Like the model, sport the look with some hardcore looking boots. The more dramatic the better! Add a gorgeous (and extremely trendy) cross-body bag with it!

Keep your look streamlined by unifying the look with one theme. For example, if you're going with hardcore boots, add a studded bag and skull jewelry. If you're going for a cute or whimsical theme, wear pink boots with a hello kitty bag!

This look is for: Trendy fashionistas, trend-setters, girls out on the town and winter jetsetters

Look 4: Diva

Are you ready to get dolled up in Fair Isle? Go glamorous, like Rhianna! Sport a cropped fair isle sweater with a high waisted skirt. There's nothing sexier than the contrast of a cozy knit and some tight leather! Add some heels and tights are you're ready for Nobu.

Want a different glam look? Go for a fair isle sweater dress. It's the perfect way to mix fair isle with formal. To glam up the down-to-earth pattern, pair the dress with a bold capelet or shrug, like one with sequins. Also try some interesting colored or textured tights! Go bold with your shoes as well. There's nothing wrong with red heels and fair isle!

This look is for: The glamorous, divas, princesses and the fashion fearless
