How to chalk your hair

Updated on February 7, 2014

If your looking for an easy non-permanent way to dye the ends of your hair, hair chalking might just be the thing for you. People have been chalking their hair for a very long time so don't worry about it killing your hair because it won't. This is very fun if you want to try something new out but don't want to go permanent. I like to add different colors like the picture to the right, I think it looks unique and gorgeous, everyone will think you took forever and did a dip-dye on your hair and you didn't. There is just a few simple steps to get this look, you will be satisfied with your new look! And if you don't like how it turns out then just wash it out and try it again, so simple! If your interested in learning how to use chalk in your hair then keep reading. Remember hair chalking is fun and definitely not as dangerous as dying your full head of hair.

What you need and directions!

These are very simple and short instructions and yes this is all you need to do this technique.

What you need:

Your favorite colors of soft pastels. (Can be purchased at craft stores and art stores as well)

Heat tool: straightner, curling iron, etc.

Directions:

First you will need to get your hair damp where you would like to apply the colors. Where you put the chalk is where it will be in your hair so be careful. Then you will need to rub on the pastel on the damp section of hair. Straighten or curl on and your ready to go! You can also do this with dry hair, just wet the pastel and rub onto your hair, it's that easy! Have fun using the chalk on your hair! This technique is unique and different so go and show it off. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope you enjoyed it, please leave your feedback below! :)

These are great pastels try them out!

yess its safe. much better than actually dying your hair. I have dark brown hair and I used pink and blue and they both showed up so whichever colors you like :)

One problem do not use oil pastel it will make your hair sticky and is harder to get out just buy soft pastels not oil pastels.

Hey im thinking about doing this for A few days. So all u do is wet ur hair a lil, rub the pastel on ur hair and striaghting it?

And does it damage ur hair?

Also how long does it stay in?

    • kayyluh profile image
      Author

      kayyluh 5 years ago

Yes Cait, all you need to do is get some pastel chalk colors damp the hair and straighten it on. It will damage your hair some just like pretty much everything but it is soooo much better than actual color. When you wash your hair it comes out, this is not permanent. If you try it out let me know hope you like how it turns out!:)

    • kayyluh profile image

      kayyluh 5 years ago

Hey Alisha! I'm sorry it's not coming out right, it could be your pastels and maybe if you have color in your hair. Sometimes products just don't mix well, the colors might be to light for your hair. Try getting a different brand of soft pastels and darker colors.

what's the different between using oil pastel chalk and soft pastal chalk? i accidentally bought oil pastel chalk but i heard it will stain you hair, is that true? how long did it last using oil pastel chalk?

    • kayyluh profile image
      Author

      kayyluh 5 years ago

Hi Katie, I wouldn't use the oil pastels on your hair because I have heard that too! Use soft and find your recipt and go return them. I am very sorry for the mix up. The soft pastels will wash out when you wash your hair which is why this technique is not permanent. :)

    • kayyluh profile image

      kayyluh 5 years ago

I would say it is because the heat makes the color stick longer. And hold that gorgeous color but I guess it isn't totally necessary you just won't achieve that full look. :)

Does it come out when it is wet or is it nessacery to shampoo and conditioner ur hair for it to come out b/c I'm going to the beach n I don't want it to come out when it gets wet

If you put your hair up then there won't be an issue. If you want the dye to stay in forever then I suggest a permanent color. But to answer your question it does come out when it's wet. Thanks for reading!

    • kayyluh profile image

      kayyluh 4 years ago

Ris-As I have said above there is no way to make it last longer without going fully permanent. The reason people enjoy the chalk is because it does come off. You can dye your hair permanently but it could be risky. I would try this look out first to make sure you like it.

Guest- No it will not stain your clothes. As long as you use the right kinda of chalk it will not stain clothes(:

Neat- I'm pretty sure it may dry and harden your hair a little nit, but nothing too drastic. It will eventually come out and go back to normal. (:

I tried this with oil pastels and it worked just fine. Your results will probably all depend on your hair type (thin, fine, thick, etc). Just scrub extra hard, and maybe try using a medicated shampoo, such as head n shoulders. If it doesn't come out right away, try just letting it fade out. It'll come out more each time you wash your hair.

    • kayyluh profile image

That is true but if you use soft pastels it will come out much quicker and you won't have to spend money on special shampoos and such.
