Male Liposuction

Updated on June 12, 2013

When we think about who goes in for cosmetic surgery, especially liposuction, we usually picture a woman. And in the past this was generally true, women made up the great majority of liposuction customers. In recent years, however, more and more males have been considering the benefits of liposuction treatment. Like women, men want to look their best and feel good about their bodies. In fact, in recent years, 15 percent of all liposuction procedures are performed on male customers. There is a clear trend toward male liposuction as a cosmetic treatment of choice.

If you are one of the many men considering liposuction, you may have a number of questions on the topic. How is male liposuction different than female liposuction? How do costs compare between men and women? What types of liposuction procedures are males receiving?

Embarrassed by a little extra weight? Male Liposuction is more and more common now-a-days.

What is Male Liposuction?

Although medically speaking male liposuction constitutes mostly the same procedure as female liposuction, there are a few differences in the male body that influence how men are treated. First of all, whereas women often seek out the services of a liposuction clinic to remove fatty deposits from the arms, thighs, and belly, these are often of less concern to men. Men tend not to accumulate body fat in arms and legs as much as women, and belly fat in men is more easily worked off through diet and exercise in men.

A more problematic area for males is the weight that is gained on either side of the belly, what many people call the love handles. Try as some men might, the love handles can seem impervious to exercise, even while firming the muscles underneath the fat, and to all kinds of diet plans. Thus, liposuction is an ideal procedure for males looking to shed their love handles.

Male Breast Reduction

Enlarged breasts in men, known by the term gynecomastia, is a very common condition. Some men develop gynecomastia as they get older, whereas other men have the condition from very early on or are even born with it. However, the great majority of cases of gynecomastia are caused not by some underlying medical condition but by the simple excess accumulation of fat in the breast. This is known as pseudogynecomastia because it is not an accumulation of breast tissue but rather of fat.

Males with this type of breast enlargement are ideal candidates for liposuction. Undergoing treatment for pseudogynecomastia is very much a cosmetic decision, but one that can have important consequences for many, many men in terms of how they feel about themselves and their bodies. Average costs for this treament are around $2,800.

Costs for Male Liposuction

In general, you will find that the costs for male liposuction are higher than they are for female liposuction. There are several reasons for this. First, the fatty deposits in men are biologically different than they are in women. The fat found in a male body is more fibrous; it is thicker and more robust. Thus, liposuction treatment for males is a bit more difficult and tends to take more time. This obviously will somewhat drive up costs for male liposuction.

Second, men are on average larger than women. This means that the amount of fat to be removed from a male’s body through liposuction treatment is often greater in comparison with females. Again, this will increase your costs by some margin.

Third, the location from which fat is removed influences liposuction costs for men and women alike. But because men often receive treatment for those locations that are most difficult to treat, the average price will be higher. Fatty deposits in the breasts and love  handles are more fibrous and tough in both sexes, and this is especially true for males.

Finding Male Liposuction Treatment

Most liposuction clinics will treat both women and men, given that the procedure is mostly identical for both sexes. However, certain doctors do specialize in male liposuction and especially in the treatment of enlarged male breasts. An Internet search for gynecomastia will lead you to a variety of liposuction clinics specializing in the problem. There are many sources of information on the condition as well. Remember that enlarged male breasts is a very common problem but one that is often easily treated with male liposuction.

The truth is, liposuction is one of the most sought after cosmetic procedures by men of all ages. Male liposuction grows in popularity year by year. And why shouldn’t it? Looking great and feeling healthy is something everybody wants.
