Phototherapy or otherwise known as Light Therapy uses waves of light to penetrate deep into the skin. This technology has been used by NASA and the US Navy to help in healing wounds. There are over 2,000 scientific reports to document the effectiveness of photo light therapy.

Now that you know what light therapy is, how can you benefit from a phototherapy treatment at home? There are several light units on the market. You might be confused though by the various different color lights and the benefits of each particular color. Following are a list of the color lights:

Blue - This light is for soothing and comforting. It is anti-sensitive and used in the treatment of acne. A warning though on the usage of blue lights. Wearing eye protection is a must. It has been known that using these color lights to have damaging effects on the eyes causing macular degeneration.

Red - The red light stimulates skin cells and helps to improve the circulation of blood. This light is beneficial for wounds, cuts, scars and treating infections. It penetrates down to about 8-10mm.

Infrared - This light penetrates even deeper than the red with a range of 30 - 40mm. These types of lights are most effective in treating deep muscles, joints and bones.

I would like to share my own personal journey I have had with using a phototherapy treatment. I purchased a DPL therapy system a few years ago in hopes of removing the reddening over my cheeks and improving overall skin texture. When I first started my treatment I was hesitant not knowing how my skin would react to the lights. I tend to have fairly sensitive skin and had since developed a skin condition called rosacea.
