Phototherapy Home Treatment - A Guide On Using Light Therapy

Updated on June 9, 2012

What is Phototherapy Treatment?

Phototherapy or otherwise known as Light Therapy uses waves of light to penetrate deep into the skin. This technology has been used by NASA and the US Navy to help in healing wounds. There are over 2,000 scientific reports to document the effectiveness of photo light therapy.

Phototherapy treatment can help with a number of ailments from aches, pains, muscle spasms to arthritis and skin problems like hyperpigmentation, age spots, freckles, acne, wrinkles, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. The lights work by stimulating the regeneration of cells in your skin. Collagen increases as well as elastin.

All light therapy is not created equal. There are several various lights that produce different effects on the body with difference in power and frequencies.

The most common form of light therapy is the sun. The UV rays you receive from the sun are not meant to be therapeutic, but rather are useful in killing bacteria. Of course, we all are aware of the damaging effects of spending too much time in the sun and what UV rays can do to our skin resulting in skin cancer and premature aging with wrinkles. Ultraviolet radiation can come from not only the sun, but through use of tanning beds and lamps. Tanning beds are proven to be dangerous and should be avoided.

Another type of light is infrared lights. Infrared is naked to the eye. These lights are invisible and can penetrate far deeper than other light sources.

Pulsed Light and Lasers - These use both visible and near infrared technology. They are used to treat an array of conditions from blood vessels, acne, sun damage, wrinkles, scarring, removing tattoos or unwanted hair, and rosacea. When you hear someone speaking of IPL lasers this is typically what doctors use in their office to treat their patients. Prices of these type of phototherapy treatments are rather high that is why you should consider treating yourself at home.

Phototherapy Treatment At Home

Now that you know what light therapy is, how can you benefit from a phototherapy treatment at home? There are several light units on the market. You might be confused though by the various different color lights and the benefits of each particular color. Following are a list of the color lights:

Blue - This light is for soothing and comforting. It is anti-sensitive and used in the treatment of acne. A warning though on the usage of blue lights. Wearing eye protection is a must. It has been known that using these color lights to have damaging effects on the eyes causing macular degeneration.

Red - The red light stimulates skin cells and helps to improve the circulation of blood. This light is beneficial for wounds, cuts, scars and treating infections. It penetrates down to about 8-10mm.

Infrared - This light penetrates even deeper than the red with a range of 30 - 40mm. These types of lights are most effective in treating deep muscles, joints and bones.

My Experience With Using A Phototherapy Treatment

I would like to share my own personal journey I have had with using a phototherapy treatment. I purchased a DPL therapy system a few years ago in hopes of removing the reddening over my cheeks and improving overall skin texture. When I first started my treatment I was hesitant not knowing how my skin would react to the lights. I tend to have fairly sensitive skin and had since developed a skin condition called rosacea. At first I only used the unit for a couple minutes at a time, slowly building up a tolerance to where I could do the full 9 minute treatment. It took some time for results to be seen, but I did notice my flushing episodes went down considerably as well as the redness softened. After prolonged use all the redness was gone and as a plus the wrinkles on my forehead have smoothed out!

The DPL Deep Penetrating Infrared Light Therapy System is the best out of all the units on the market and I highly recommend the DPL system over any other model available.
