Beauty is skin deep
According to the prevailing societal consensus, beauty is defined as to what is pleasing to the eye. Beautiful people are those that draw others to them. Those who are considered to be attractive tend to have benefits, perks, and opportunities that are closed to the less attractive among us.
Although there is an old adage that beauty is only skin deep, people continue to judge each other based upon physical attractiveness. Physical attractiveness is one of the components to social acceptance and approval. Infants who are considered to be attractive are hugged more and oogled. Children who are considered to be attractive are more popular and more intelligent. This continues to the teen years and beyond.
Attractive and/or beautiful people are viewed in a more positive light than those who are not attractive. Even though we deny that looks are "not that important", subconsciously, we know that looks are extremely important. Our first impressions of people are oftentimes based upon their looks.
