My hair is black, i dye it red. I want to change it to brown, what's the procedure?

What color should i use to turn my hair brown?
I am 49, my normal color is black and i have been dying it with dark red (mahogany).

I'd be careful about it. If you dye your hair too much, it can damage it. If you're concerned about it coming out wrong, you should go to a hair salon so a professional can get the exact shade you want.

If you want to do it yourself, look at hair dyes on a store shelf and go by the color guide on the back. It'll tell you what it will look like if you follow the directions properly.

The question is do you want dark brown or light brown?  If dark brown you can apply it over the red but it may still come out with strong warm tones. You may want to try a semi-permanent color for more deposit and better conditioning.    If you want a light brown color you may have to use a high lift formula to lighten the red to a golden stage and then you can apply the light brown shade.  Working with underlying red pigment is challenging especially if you don't want to see much warmth in the end result. You may need to tone the color with an ash based color.
When the black roots grow in you will need a color with an ash base as there is a lot of warm underlying pigment when you are lifting from black to light brown. The challenge also comes in when you are dealing with virgin hair at the roots and chemically treated hair on the ends which may need two different formula's to get a good result. It may be worth your while to seek the advice of a professional.
