I am afflicted by melasma, which is dark patches on the skin. Sadly mine is on my cheeks and hard to hide, cover up make up just doesn’t do the trick. The best thing I have ever encountered to treat dark spots is called Tri-luma, it WAS amazingly expensive and WAS available only by prescription. I say WAS because sadly and suddenly the company has stopped production. I am currently using Hydroquinone 4% which is a skin lightener and have enjoyed moderate success. It is a cream that you put on twice a day on clean skin and is relatively inexpensive but must be obtained with a prescription. I hope this helps!

Rodan + Fields Dermatologists is a company started by the two dermatologists that created ProActiv.  I am an Independent Consultant with them.  We have products that were developed for precisely this problem.  They do contain Hydroquinone.  However, you do not need a prescription.  That is because they each contain 2% each, which of course adds up to equal 4%.  But since they each only have the 2%, we can sell it without a perscription.  My website is:  http://donnasmith.myrandf.com.  However, I can save you 10% plus get you free shipping if you sign up as my preferred customer.  So, please contact me before you make your purchase.  My email is:  donnasmith@bresnan.net.  I would love to answer more questions.

I suggest Porcelana which is a bleaching cream that can be found in the local pharmacy.  Follow the directions on the carton but is the discoloration is excessive, I would suggest seeing a dermatologist as the other responders to your question.

I would recommend using NeriumAD, which works really well on African American skin for anti aging, large pores, hyperpigmentation and acne scars. This is the real deal - I'm not kidding! It was accidentally discovered while clinicians were studying cancer treatments using the Nerium Oleander plant, which appeals to me because I tend to shy away from Big Pharma. You can try it risk free for 30 days - it's $80 - but after that you can get it for free. (That's what I did) I got mine through nancyconrad.com. Good luck!

Sadly, there is no outright cure - but the right treatment and ongoing preventative methods can make a huge difference and help you gain an even skin tone.

To lighten hyperpigmented skin it's very important to note the role of sunlight in triggering the production of melanin, the dark pigment in skin.  Please note there are a number of inexpensive AND effective natural remedies to lighten dark marks but you shouldn't ignore the impact of sunshine as detailed see my 3 hubs concerning dark spots, melasma etc.

When a person is unhappy with the appearance of their skin it can lower self esteem so finding the right treatment regime and preventatives can really make a difference physically as well as mentally - promoting a more positive outlook on life generally
