I have seven and each one symbolizes something important in my life.  I got shooting stars to mark a landmark birthday, my daughters were born in Texas so I have two yellow roses with their names in scrolling ribbon. I have recently added a small bud to the two roses to symbolize my grandson.  I guess my point is if you're going to put something on your body that is going to last a lifetime you should make it something that is more than just a pretty design or picture that you will outgrow or get boared with in a few years.  It should be unique and meaningful to you.  Something that makes a statement to the world about you.

As much as I believe it's best to wait until something comes up naturally, and as SopranoRocks said to have a proffesional tattoo artist design something beautiful, I can also understand your need to commemorate your child now. The image that I had after my miscarriage was of a bird flying away. It was like all she left behind was a single feather for me to cherish: the memory I had of having her inside me.

There are a bunch of places on my body that I know I'll tattooed eventually, but I find that if I let it simmer on the back burner a good idea will evolve and will feel natural and meaningful. Trying to find somthing may not be the best way to go. You've got your body for your whole life. What's the rush?

I plan on getting my first tattoo next fall/winter so I have a lot of time to brainstorm.  I am an artist myself (mostly pencils and charcoals) so have been weaving ideas together on paper; images and words/quotes that mean something to me. Also, I have found there are a plethora of tattoo idea websites.  Here are a few of the many interesting ones:

    http://www.tattoonow.com
    http://www.tattoo-meanings.com
    http://www.targettattoo.com

I think it is also a good idea to spend time finding a qualified talented tattoo artist who would best put your ideas into ink (I am even willing to travel to find one).  After all, it is permanent.  Many artists have their portfolios online.  You can also find local tattoo parlors and email ideas to see what they can offer.  The possibilities are endless.

Le us know how your turns out smile
