Choosing Your Website Builder

Updated on January 6, 2013

A website builder is the platform where you will design your website and all of your web pages. There are essentially two kinds of website builders. One kind of website builder is an online tool that hosting companies provide their users with. Another kind of website builder is a software product that lets you design your website on your computer and allows you to upload it to your site.

Create Your Own Website for Beginners

Choosing a website builder that meets your needs requires a little knowledge on your part. Even using the simplest kind of website builder still requires you to at least be adept with a word processor and the different internet browsers. Besides, you can't be thinking of creating your own website without the basic knowledge of computers and the internet.

Using Your Hosting Company’s Website Builder

Does your webhost have a website builder? Is a tool like that important to you? A website builder is an important part of a website creation process, without it, you won’t have a website. If you are new to website building and don’t know anything about it yet, choosing a webhost that will provide one for you can come in handy. Why? It can mean that you can easily create your website. Without an easy to use tool like that from your webhost, your website may be impossible to create at all.

If you have chosen a webhost to host your site for you, then you can easily make use of their website builder. All webhosts on the internet that provide free hosting services so far have free website builders. How easily you can navigate them though, depends on how familiar you are on their site and on how user-friendly their tools are.

The disadvantages you may be facing with if you choose your hosting company’s website builder is that the designs and templates that you use for your site are reliable only while you are using their servers. Once you opt for a different hosting company, you’ll have to rebuild your site from scratch. Another disadvantage you’ll be facing is the limitations of their website builder. You’ll have to settle with only the features that they provide.

Using a Website Building Software

If you happen to choose a webhost without an easy to use online website builder, you will have to look for your own website building software. Choosing a website builder that suits you best may not be that easy. First of all, you will have to take into consideration the features you want for your website. Would you like to insert multimedia files like photos, videos, and sound files? Would you also consider adding features such as the ability to insert ads, forums, contact forms, rss feeds, newsletters, polls, and charts?

The advantages you have when you use a website building software is that you can create your website and web pages offline and upload it to your choice of webhost. You certainly have more freedom as to what features you are going to add on your sites. Aside from that, you can build your site anywhere. You can choose any webhost of your choice and when you are not satisfied with their services, you can choose to move your site from one webhost to another, without having to build your site from scratch. However, some website builders can be easier to navigate and some can be harder. In terms of expenses, some software products are more expensive, some are relatively cheap and some are free.

Making Your Final Decision

If you are just starting out and you don’t know anything about website building, you might want to opt for your webhost’s website building templates and designs. Aside from the fact that they are easier to use and most of the basic features in website building are already there, they are already online and ready to go live the instant you publish your site. However, more advanced website owners usually prefer to use website building software because it allows them to have more freedom and allows them to include special features on their site.
