How to Hide Your Friends on Facebook

Updated on June 12, 2010

Hiding you friends list on Facebook is actually an option that was just reinstated with the latest release of privacy controls. Way back in the early days of Facebook, a user who wanted to hide their friend list in Facebook could simply set the friend list to "hidden" on the privacy page. But after some changes, Facebook completely got rid of that option, exposing users friends list to everyone on the internet. With their latest (but certainly not last) release of controls, Facebook once again allows you to hide your friend list. In fact, you can now hide your friend list from a select group of people as well. This article will show you a step by step guide of how to hide your Facebook friend list from everyone or just a select few.

First, open up your privacy settings on Facebook by clicking "Account," "Privacy Settings" at the top right. Under "Basic Directory Information," choose "view settings." On the page that appears, find the entry that says "See my friends list."

On the drop down menu, you can decide who can see your friends list. If you want it to only be visible to people you are already friends with, then set it to "Friends Only." If you want to hide it from certain people that you already are friends with but show it to others, then click "Customize." Then, in the box, you can pick and choose the people you want to see your friends list and those who can't.

Hiding your friend list is a good thing to do in terms of privacy. You may, however, want to consider making your friend list available to "Friends of Friends" so that they can find mutual connections. This makes it easier to find you when they are doing searches and will result in more friend requests for you.

I think that if you are actually friends with everyone you have on Facebook, this wouldn't be an issue.

Do you know a way to prevent your friends from seeing comments in your photos from other friends?, my privacy is extremely important for me, I don't want my friends to know my other friends and I have everything pretty well setup, one thing I haven't been able to do is preventing FriendX to see that FriendY liked my photo and commented on it, so now FriendX knows I have FriendY in my friends list :-(.
