HTC EVO 4G ICS UPDATE

HTC Evo 4G was a 2010 flagship device of Sprint which was launched on its WiMAX network. Despite having a great 4.3 inches screen, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 512 MB RAM HTC has no desire to update this great phone to Android ICS. So, there will be no official Ice Cream Sandwich for HTC Evo 4G. But you can do this yourself; this is the fun of using the Android. Here is a step by step guide to upgrade HTC Evo 4G with Android ICS.

Why Shall You Need to ICS have Your Evo 4G?

Evo 4G is running with Android 2.3.3. With the arrival of ICS the older version is now outdated. New Android 4x or Ice Cream Sandwich is a totally different one. It is much more polished and user friendly. This is a great update. ICS is much more stable and faster than Gingerbread or any other older versions. The interface is completely changed and you shall feel that. So, Android Ice Cream Sandwich will be great to have in your HTC Evo 4G.

Be Aware of these before Proceeding

If you are a novice in rooting and such tweaking of your Android device do not do it alone. Find and seek help from a more experienced one.

This is a custom ROM based upgradation. There may be some bugs in it. These three features may not be available after update: 1)Camera Preview, 2)Gallery Editing and 3)WiMAX.

If you still want to do this go at your own risk because there is always a bit risk in rooting and upgrading. Don’t blame the author for any harm to your device or data loss.

I gave up on ICS and went with the Jelly Bean. I used a SlimBean rom and it works great except for video capture (doesn't work) and some videos do not play like Netflix. I don't mind as I do not use this device as a phone or video player. I mainly stream music from TuneIn, Pandora, etc. Works great for that.

If you are not already rooted and have the most up to date HTC software version you will not be able to root without rolling back your bootloader version. Try androidforums.com for current instructions. Go to HTC EVO 4G-all things root. Links to many ROM's there as well.

The OP assumes that you've installed a recovery app like ClockworkMod or AmonRa. When you enter recovery with those apps, you'll have the option to install from a zip.

My EVO 4G CANNOT be updated to ICS using the method outlined above. After I wipe everything and go to the main menu to install ics, "INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD" IS NOT A MENU OPTION. I've read this same set of instructions on four different sites. You people need to quit plagiarizing from each other and do some actual work to accomplish what you're telling people they can do with stuff like this. You're out in left field on this one and probably most others. DAMN RIGHT YOU CAN EMAIL ME - gessmansr@gmail.com

There may be some bugs but these are being fixed regularly.

This article doesn't mention that ICS on the EVO is STILL an alpha/beta development platform! Not only are the download links broken in the article (the 'old' version is now 3 days old), these things change daily (see previous comment lol, camera and maybe gallery is "fixed" now (maybe)), the ROMS will not be optimized yet so battery strength will/may be worse than you are used to, and there ARE more problems than just those listed. Not wanting to run anyone away, but these are still just for testing.

For those of you who just want to install ICS on your Evo and go on with your life, don't expect to use these for the next year as you will most likely be very disappointed when you find things work poorly or don't work at all... I would recommend waiting for a few more months until more bugs are worked out. If you are a ROM tester, you already have known about ICS on Evo for months now, so carry on.
