Iomega External Hard Drive Review

Updated on January 13, 2012

I have always throught that Iomega makes the best hard drives. There are some notable competitors like Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba. I just trust the Iomega drives a little more.

In Iomega external hard drive review we will shortly review an external backup drive, then we will look at 2 portable drives, one for PC and the other for MAC. After which we will look at a carry caseto add more protection to those 2 portable drives.

Iomega Prestige

This external hard drive has proven to be fast, responsive and easy to use. It's casing is made from aluminium making it quite sturdy.

The drive comes in 1 TB, 1.5 TB and 2 TB sizes. If you combine the Prestige with the iConnect, you can connect to the drive wirelessly.

At 4.4 x 6.1 x 8.9 inches and 3.1 pounds this high capacity drive is much more compact than it's predecessors.

Features include:

  • USB 2.0 interface, enables the user to transfer data quickly and easily and can be used universally.
  • The rate for the data transfer is 480 Mbps.
  • The NTFS drive is already formatted so is ready to use.
  • It has an 8 MB spindle speed resulting in fast access speeds.

The transferring of files is fast, and the ability to play music or watch video, from the drive, directly through a desktop, is a bonus.

If in constant use, this product can get a bit hot, but for the irregular user I cannot see any problems. It might be an advantage to invest in the extended warranty when purchasing the Iomega.

Generally, I was pleased with the overall performance of the Iomega, and would recommend it.

Iomega eGo BlackBelt USB 2.0 500 GB Compact Portable Hard Drive

As portable hard drives go, this one is impressive for its size. In addition, it is extremely durable and it performs well.

At 0.9 x 5.1 x 3.6 inches and 15.4 ounces this product really is pocket sized and very light.

Also impressive are the transfer speeds and connection speeds. With the Black Belt, I have been able to store important data, music and some photos. Even though it took a bit of battering, it still responded immediately, when required.

Other notable features are the Iomega Protection Suite software to protect all of your data. This is included in the price and can be downloaded. Also, there is a three year warranty, which is free, when registering the product.

This is an exceptional piece of kit with a good physical appearance, good function and durability. What more could the active traveller ask for? I tried to find a downside to the Black Belt, but was unable to do so. For its price, it offers very good value for money.

Iomega eGo Mac Edition

The Iomega portable external drive for Mac users is manufactured in a sturdy aluminum design. It is safely protected for any traveling needs as it features a Drop Guard function that ensures adequate protection for the hard drive.

The hard drive is formatted HFS+ so it's usable right out-of-box . It is fairly compact, and runs very quietly, noise is sometimes a problem with portable drives.

The eGo Mac is available in 320 and 500 GB, it's dimensions are 2.1 x 7 x 5.1 inches and it only weighs 14.6 ounces.

The eGo Mac comes complete with the necessary Firewire and USB cables.

One important point to take note of is that registration of the product must be done online to get the 3 year warranty.

In my opinion the eGo is the best most secure portable drive for MAC users.

Iomega Portable Hard Drive Carrying Case

The Iomega Portable Drive Carrying Case has the ability to store and transport your Iomega portable hard drive comfortably and efficiently without the fear of any damage to your hard drive. This provides reassurance that your equipment is adequately stored, which is essential to any traveler.

The compact design of the case allows easily inclusion in any type of backpack, briefcase or travel case. An interior strap enables a hard drive to be securely fastened, preventing any movement of the equipment. Complete with an internal pocket for cable storage.

The case has a stylish overall look, but at the same time, seems to be of a very substantial material which will give ample protection for your portable hard drive. An extra form of padding lines the interior to give it an added safeguard.

The case fits the 2 portable drives that I looked at in this article.
