How to Get Free Ringtones and Message Tones for the Virgin Mobile LG Rumor Touch- Step by Step

Updated on October 17, 2011

Welcome to LG Rumor Touch Hack Central @Hubpages.

Chances are that this is the first of my many Hubpage's articles on the LG Rumor Touch (which you may have through Virgin Mobile or through Sprint) that you have visited.

Ringtones are essential to making your phone your own, but its hard to swallow paying $2-$3 per song when you can buy an entire song on Itunes for $1.

I can teach you how to get any ringtones or SMS tones you want in a few steps. I assume you do not know much about this phone or about tech, and please feel free to ask questions in the comments. I try to get back to any questions within a day.

Sometimes community members pick up my slack and help out as well with answering questions. I encourage you to look through the comment archives and see if your question has already been asked and answered.

When you are done here, please feel free to learn about installing apps and games at some of my other hubs.

Enjoy your new phone!

LG Rumor Touch (Sprint or Virgin Mobile)

Those of us who own LG Rumor Touch phones, especially those who own them through Virgin Mobile ask all over the internet how to get free ringtones. This is the answer. I've made around 300 tones like this just today.
Those of us who own LG Rumor Touch phones, especially those who own them through Virgin Mobile ask all over the internet how to get free ringtones. This is the answer. I've made around 300 tones like this just today.

Step One to "Ringtone Freedom"

  1. Get your phone equipped with a microSD card.
  2. Hook phone to computer with USB cable.
  3. Create a folder in the microSD storage labeled something like "Free Sprint Ringtones" or "Free Virgin Mobile Ringtones" or just "Ringtones" (can be accessed through "My Computer").
  4. Create a temporary folder on your desktop labeled something like " Free Ringtones", which is where we will put the finished products of this process until we transfer them to your phone.

Step Two to "Ringtone Freedom"

  1. Visit the website Audiko - It is completely FREE - No hidden "catch" (so far, so good)
  2. I recommend creating an account so that you can save a library of your free Virgin Mobile or Sprint ringtones.
  3. Audiko is stellar for your Sprint or Virgin Mobile ringtones for two reasons:
  • First-You can upload any of your own mp3 music from your computer/phone/other storage devices and use their super easy (compared to other's out there) ringtone creator.
  • If you have an account, the ringtone will be saved. Otherwise it's a one time shot. MAKE SURE that you download the non-Iphone version (which translates into the .mp3 version) and make sure you download it to your COMPUTER (remember that temporary folder we made in "Step One" on the desktop). Iphone ringtones will not work!
  • Second-You can search their entire library of popular free music ringtones and download them (if you do not have an account) or save them to your account library to download now or later.
  • Our ultimate goal, however, is to get some tester ringtones downloaded to our temporary "Free Ringtones" folder on the desktop.
  • Pick three already made free ringtones and try making say, one or two of your own from your mp3 music using their ringtone creator.

Step Four to "Ringtone Freedom"

  1. Now, the next step is CRUCIAL. We will rename the ringtone file extensions from ".mp3" to ".3g2"
  2. IMPORTANT: Your computer will throw a fit. Ignore it!
  3. ADVANCED NOTE: For those of you who are grumbling to yourself about having to rename each mp3 ringtone file one by one, I recommend downloading "File Renamer Basic". I use it, and it works fast and easy. Of course, it is also free!

Your Sprint or Virgin Mobile LG Rumor Touch is almost to "Ringtone Freedom". Read On!

Step Five to "Ringtone Freedom"

  1. We are on the home stretch-Hang in there!
  2. On the computer, go to "My Computer" and navigate to the "Mass Storage" device (aka, our microSD card) to bring up the folder "Ringtones" (see "Step One") we made earlier.
  3. Drag and Drop the renamed free ringtone files from the desktop folder to the folder on the microSD card.
  4. When the transfer is finished, you may close all the windows and disconnect your phone from the PC.

Step Six to "Ringtone Freedom" (Last One)

  1. At this point, I assume that you have knowledge of how to navigate the various features and settings of the LG Rumor Touch (Sprint or Virgin Mobile).
  2. On your phone, access "Mass Storage"---->"File Manager"------->"Your Ringtone Folder"
  3. Once in your "Ringtone" folder, our first step is to TEST that the phone will play the ringtone, which by the way, the phone reads as a "Video Ringtone".
  4. Press one of your finished tones and try to play it. If it plays, we are in business. If not, something went wrong and you may want to repeat this process until you get a file that does play.
  5. Assuming that the tone played, <----arrow back to the regular file manager list of your finished tones. Select MORE in the bottom right corner, and from that list, select COPY MULTIPLE. Press (my phone highlights them in red) any that you want to test (one is enough for the first go).
  6. Select COPY TO IN PHONE from the bottom left of the screen once you've decided which tone to try first. Unfortunately, the phone renames the file when it moves it from the microSD card to the phone memory. If it copies fine, then move on to the next steps. If not, try another one of your testers, and if they also do not copy, you may need to go back through the process again.
  7. Now that we've copied our ringtone to our phone, it may be assigned from the category "My Videos" when choosing a unique tone for a contact or when setting ringer settings for the whole phone.
  8. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you decide that you want to delete a tone you've copied to your phone for space reasons, go to PHOTOS + VIDEOS------>MY PHOTOS + VIDEOS-----.IN PHONE------>VIEW----->MEDIA FILTER------->Videos. You can delete from here. You may also rename files here too (remember the phone changes the original file name when copied....)

Ringer Size Limit Update

At the request of comments, the file size limit for free Virgin Mobile and Sprint ringtones or message tone seems to be 500kb. Please keep this in mind while following this tutorial.

"Message Tones" UPDATE

Thanks to comments left by Samuel and YouTube's MentalNinja1004 , the mystery of how to use and download mp3 ringtones as message tones and not just as free ringtones has been solved!!

Please see "Directions for Message Tones" at the end of this hub.

  • TAKE NOTE:

The "Message Tones" also work as free Virgin Mobile or Sprint ringtones.

For some people, the qcp tones are the preferred free Virgin Mobile or Sprint ringtone format because it leaves open the option to assign a picture to a contact and have that come up when they ring.

If you use the 3g2 format, it will replace the contact photo for the ring only (as you will still be able to see the photo in the contacts list) because it is a "video ringtone".

Directions for MESSAGE TONES

Thanks to readers, we have solved this problem as well.

You can use mp3 ringtones as message tones (and ringtones) by doing the following:

  1. Rename mp3 ringtones with the file extension .qcp, and as with .3g2, ignore the Window's error messages.
  2. Attach this .qcp file in an email message and send to YOURNUMBER@vmpix.com
  3. Wait patiently for at least five minutes. If it does not come, send with a different email provider (for example, if you send with Juno, try with Gmail).
  4. Eventually, you will receive an email message with a "voice memo" attached.
  5. It gives you the option to save this voice memo to your "voice memo" folders (but they do not end up there and will erase any voice memos you have...you must restart your phone before it will allow you to record voice memos again-so don't do it!).
  6. What you want to do is press the voice memo and select "set as ringer"-Once assigned to anything, the ring is stored in the "my audio" menu for future assigning in the ringer settings menu. REMEMBER-do not SAVE! It doesn't work. You must assign it to something to save it, but you do not have to keep it assigned to keep it in the My Audio folder for future assigning in the Ringer Settings menu.
  7. Troubleshooting: 1) Try a different email service 2) Make the file smaller. These two things should solve most problems.
  8. NOTES: I used gmail and the Thunderbird Email Client. When I tried the Windows Live Desktop Email Client, it did not go through.

Your Sprint or Virgin Mobile LG Rumor Touch now has full "ringtone freedom".

If it worked, which email service did you use?

If the message tone process worked, pick the one that most closely matches your situation.

Congratulations!!!

ENJOY your "Ringtone Freedom"

I've been working on making free Virgin Mobile and Sprint ringtones work for the LG Rumor Touch.

Virgin Mobile wants you to use only their ringtones, apps, etc. Their ringtones are way way way too expensive. Just don't do it!

This is probably what allows them to offer such inexpensive quality service, however, but the hacker in me sees it as a challenge.

Sprint ringtones for free are just as scarce.

I hope you have similar success beating "the system".

Power to the People!

@bhaas, upgrade to an Android and all your problems will be solved. Virgin Mobile is still a great provider, as I am still with them. If you are too frustrated to continue with them, I recommend T-Mobile's no contract option as best other alternative. I keep lines with both providers right now. Now that there are several Android phones under $50 bucks, it is a great time to upgrade from the LG Rumor Touch. Best of luck!

It looks like we can't e-mail any kind of file to our LG Rumor Phones.

My phone crashed today. (Constant restarting) I fixed that prob but

I can't change my txt tone to what is was before.

The phone is basically useless. Sure it takes crappy pics and vids, but if

it's stored on the phone it's gonna stay there.

I loved VM but now I think it's time to get a real provider if there is

      such a thing. RIP VM.....

This is a GREAT way to have pure MP3's as your ringtone for ALL calls and texts!! When u convert from MP3 to 3G2 you lose a lot and it sucks. Emailing yourself an MP3 file that you renamed .qcp is perfect. It ends up in you My Audio folder and from there, you can attach it to ANYTHING in your cell. Email YOURNUMBER.vmpix.com, attach renamed .MP3 to .qcp, play the voice memo and set it to be ringer for messages and it will end up in your My Audio folder. From there, attach it to whatever you want!!! MP3's sound 100 times better than the converted 3G2's which our cells use for ringers.

i've successfully got ringtones on my phone but still haven't cracked the issue of message tones, it seems the .qcp file extension that worked in years previous no longer works for the rumor touch. it will not allow me to send it to my phone, is there no easy way to change the file extension and put it straight on the mass storage device with a data cable, as done with the ringtones? i just want to set my own little tone for when i get incoming texts, but it's turning out to be extremely difficult!

1st of all I want to thank you soooo very much for EVERYTHING that you do for ALL OF US that need help like this! You are absolutely AMAZING! 2nd thing is that I found that after "step 4" in your directions, you DO NOT have to copy/move the ringtones into your phone, and have them use up loadzzz of "In Phone" memory. Once you click on File Manager & then the "FREE RINGTONES" or w/e u name your folder, just click on MORE/ASSIGN/CHOOSE THE RINGTONE YOU WANT/INCOMING CALLS/& select from single contacts, ect...I hope this helps. Thanks again!

i have an LG rumor touch thru virgin mobile. they recently sent me a new one because my old one broke. this worked just fine on both phones. by "this", i mean renaming mp3 to 3g2, uploading to phone's mass storage and then copying to in phone memory. i just did so tonight and my files are both around 476kb. as far as i can tell, i can only assign them to calls, not texts.

@BarbieAmor, yeah, its possible, there are sort of two different versions of this phone now on Virgin Mobile - they made it impossible to install 3rd party apps in the new one and it would not surprise me if they found a way to block this as well.

You can always break down and spend the three bucks to get a killer tone you can use as much as it pains me to say that....

Well basically the message tone method doesn't work anymore. Idk what virgin mobile did but this doesn't work anymore .. Can some please figure out another way for us to get message tones.. My phone has been on vibrate for a month and I cant take it.! lol .. Please help

    • profile image

      KHill1989 6 years ago

To make the ringtones into message tones they can also be in a .mp3 format and you can just attach as many as you can in one text message(i think like 10), send the message to your own number, but right after you hit send you can hit cancel and ya do basically the same thing at the end click on more and then assign it as a message tone so it will save to my audio. I figured that out by myself before I saw this site its alot easier then having to send each file and wait for it and ya dont even need a computer!!

      from the author:

the problem you are most likely having is that you are not showing the extensions by default. You have to go in to folder settings and uncheck the box "hide extension for known file types".

To do this, open any folder on your computer---at the top go to "tools" and then select "folder options" and then "view" - the check box is about the tenth item down the list.

Check by going to Main Menu-Settings-Phone Info-Version.

If it is 8, this may be a new hack that works on the latest version. If not, even better.

I also found a good way to make ringtones...

      1. Put the song you want into windows movie maker, shorten it to what ever part you want, just make sure it's under 30 sec.

      2. Save it as a move file, it will save as .wma that's fine, hook your phone up to the computer then go to DCIM folder then 100LGDCF folder.

      3. Drag and drop the .wma file in the 100LGDCF folder and then right click on the file and change the extension to .3g2

      4. Then unplug the phone from the computer and go to photos and videos click on memory card and you should see a video there with a question mark on it click on it and make sure it plays then click back and then click on more and assign it as a ringer.

      Hope this helps!

    • profile image

      Anisa 6 years ago

okay so this is what i did....

      1. I put an mp3 song into windows movie maker then shortened it to what I wanted it to be then I saved it as a movie file.

      2. I changed the extension from .wma to .mp3 then I went to Gmail and attached it to a message and sent it to (my phone number)@pm.sprint.com

      3. I got the message as a text then I clicked on more then view attachment then set as ringer and it gives you a whole bunch of options and I chose messages.

and that was it...that is how i got it to work :)

Anisa, the mp3 should not end up working out as a ringtone, however. The email you send the file from makes a difference as does the size of the file. Gmail has the best luck.

If you find that an mp3 is actually working for you as a ringtone, hook us up with exactly what you did!

I found a much easier way to do this, i went to the free ringtones sites and downloaded all the ringtones i wanted to my memory card, then went to www.onlineconvert.com and used their video converter, chose to convert to 3g2 then uploaded my file from my memory card and it converted it, then saved the converted file to my memory card and it allowed me to assign it as a ringtone! This is a great option if you dont have access to a pc and it really seems easier than if you have a pc, but thank you for all your info!

oh and if you guys want to delete stuff out of the audio folder, you go to:

      Main Menu>Tools>Mass Storage>File Manager>Sound

and from there touch the "More" tab at the bottom of the screen and it should give you options there such as "Delete Multiple" or "Delete All"

Noooo offense, but I figured this out so much quicker on my own. This site is indeed super helpful but I worked better figuring it out myself. Sorry for all the posts! haha

Haha nevermind! I think I figured out the size limit issue.

I went to makeownringtones.com and went from there. I can now send message tones! :D If any of you would like to know a step by step on what I did just let me know!

In fact, you can bluetooth these songs to your folder under:

      mass storage>file manager>bluetooth

and you don't even have to change the file name. I'll see if I can put up a video for all you macbook users out there. It's pretty easy. Saves you SO much time too.

but still trying to figure out the size limit issue. Anyone know how to fix that? You don't need a macbook, and I just need to know how to fix that for the phone in general.

Okay, so I actually found another pretty easy way to send qcp files to your phone. This works best if you have a macbook though.

I've been using a program called "wavepad" for over a year and it works SOOO good for me. I've been able to trim songs, convert mp3 files to 3g2 and bluetooth them to my phone and they go right onto my photos and videos folder.

What I did with the ringtone I wanted was to bluetooth it to my phone under a qcp file name after hours of trying to figure this out. It goes under my "bluetooth folder" under the file manager on my phone.

Next, I copied the ringtone and put it in my "Sound" folder. I accidently stumbled upon it as I was texting a girlfriend of mine and I looked to see if I could attach audio and there it was! :) I was relieved until it then told me that "message size exceeds limit."

So, I'm wondering where to go from there? Like how do I know what the limit is for my phone? I don't know how to figure out if the message is too big to send.

@becky, yes you will need to enable the ability to view known file extensions.

Good visuals here for XP http://www.fileinfo.com/help/windows_show_extensio...

      And for Window's 7

@tynie, just replace the ".mp3" with ".3g2" through renaming the file.

I've figured out how to get the e-mail. For Sprint users, you need to send the file to your number @pm.sprint.com

The only issue I came across after that was not being able to open MMS.
