Mobile Gadgets: Clarion MiND Mobile Internet Navigation Device Review

Updated on March 15, 2011

The Clarion MiND Internet Navigation Device is yet another GPS capable gadget that appears to be a must have. The MiND operates from Navteq maps and up to 2 million Points of Interest (POIs). Since this device is Internet capable Google 2D and 3D Map information can be sent to it as well. Not only do you get turn-by-turn directions but you also get Web access through WiFi and Bluetooth connections. Popular MySpace and YouTube software is also pre-loaded. If that is not enough – you will have access to email (including POP3 and SMTP) and PDF documents. Multiple email accounts can be used (receiving and sending) and are easily accessed by the onscreen keyboard. This onscreen keyboard appears with a simple tap to the Touchscreen.

GPS and Internet Connectivity in one Mobile Device

The Clarion MiND has a 4.8” Touchscreen, 4GB memory that can be expanded with a MicroSD card, integrated speakers and headphone jack. The Clarion MiND is not only a pretty gadget it is an intelligent gadget that guides your through traffic whether in a car, on a bike or motorcycle. If you would rather walk the MiND guides you as well. As you head out to your destination re-routing in easy – options include a short route, a quick route or an economical route.

While on the go the Clarion MiND is not just a navigation device. It is an entertainment device too. When in range of a WiFi connection, as mentioned before there is one touch access to MySpace and YouTube. In addition to that there you can use the FireFox-based browser to find information on the Internet.

File management is possible on the Clarion MiND so you have the ability to search, move, copy, delete or to change file names. You can create documents on the device’s Note Pad. What if you have a document saved to a USB Flash drive or on a MicroSD card that needs some editing. No problem, Note Pad is activated as either is inserted into the Clarion MiND and can be edited as well.

Music, videos, movies and digital photos can be viewed and managed from the internal 4GB memory or from a MicroSD card. Compatible file formats include:

  • Audio files – MP3, MP4, MPG, MPEG, RM, RA, RV, RMVB, AAC, AC3, OGG, WAV, WMA
  • Video files – WMV, 3GP, DIVX
  • Photo files – JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP

The rechargeable battery is good for at least 1.3 hours before needing a re-charge. Both a DC and AC (in car and in home) power adapters are included with the purchase of a Clarion MiND. Also included with the initial purchase is a windshield and dash mount. If you choose to purchase the optional docking station you will have the ability to receive real-time traffic information.

This is a gadget that could become addictive. The portability factor is number one and the information and entertainment factor is top notch.

Quite impressive for a GPS. I never thought of using one to surf the web or play MP3s.
