Viber Review: Free Worldwide Calls and Text Messaging

As I was checking out some free and popular apps on my iPhone, I came across an app called Viber. It boasts to allow you to call and text people around the globe for free, as long as they have Viber as well. I saw that it had a four and-a-half star out of five rating, so I decided to give it a try. Not to mention, I have friends and family all around the world; so it would really come in handy for me.

I downloaded Viber from the iPhone app store and the set-up was easy. There were only a few steps, consisting of importing my contacts from my iPhone into Viber, adding my mobile number to Viber, and sending an automatic message out to all of my contacts, notifying them about Viber. What immediately attracted me to Viber is the fact that it uses your mobile number as you ID. Therefore, if another Viber user wanted to call or text message me, all they would have to do is use my mobile number or select me from their Viber contact list. In other words, there’s no separate account ID to remember.

Something else that I like about Viber is the simplicity and familiarity of it. Viber’s interface is very similar to my iPhone’s regular phone app interface; so it was easy for me to adjust to it.

I tested Viber out with a couple of friends to see if it lives up to its claims. I made a short call to my cousin, who has an Android phone, and the clarity of our call was pretty good. Text messaging went fairly smoothly, too. However, when I tried calling a friend of mine, who has a Windows phone, the call wouldn’t go through. It seems that Viber has some compatibility issues with Windows phones at the time being. She got an error message that said that Viber is working to try and resolve it.

Another downside to Viber is that you cannot change its ringtone, unless you have a jailbroken iPhone (for iPhone users), like I do. Then you could do it through an app from Cydia called iFile. I will include a tutorial on how to do this down below. I did it and it worked!

Viber is a revolutionary app that allows users to make calls and send text messages around the world for free, using their existing mobile numbers. The set up is simple and it is easy to adjust to because of its interface, which is identical to a smart phone’s regular phone app's interface. It may have some compatibility issues; but Viber is working to resolve them. Also, you cannot Viber's ring tone unless you have a jailbroken iPhone. Nevertheless, Viber is worth using, in my opinion.
