While I'm not that familiar with Gopro most action cameras are a trade off between rugged construction and ability for motion video vs camera functions and refinement.
I believe the Gopro is waterproof to more than 30' with good lowlight performance and good anti-vibration / stabilization.
Action cams usually don't have any kind of zoom capacity, they have a set aspect ratio that allows the best POV for most action situations which is a fairly wide angle, roughly what your eyes would see looking straight ahead.
The are designed to be hands free, turn them on & forget them. Many higher end models also have a setting for faster frame rates to give them slow motion to some extent.
If you need / want an action cam Gopro is considered to be one of the best. But if you want a general camera there are better choices for less money.
