OS does you to present with the desktop loaded on to your screen and waiting for you start your programs from start button, ready to run programs from run option, ready to display the tasks it is showing in task bar etc., in windows OSs, other OS like unix are different, basically it involves, memory management, I/O management, Process Management etc for us to work and use the computers nicelly the way we wanted it to be...as a form of system softwares.

We can say that operating system is the heart in using the computer. It mainly acts as a interface between the user and Hardware. If the operating system is failed we cannot do anything with our system. There are several types of O.S's such as DOS,Windows-95,98,XP,7 and UNIX,LINUX.Each and every O.S has it's own features.

Operating systems provide a software platform on top of which other programs, called application  programs, can run. The application programs must be written to run on top of a particular operating system. Your choice of operating system, therefore, determines to a great extent the applications you can run. For PCs, the most popular operating systems are DOS, OS/2, and Windows, but others are available, such as Linux.
