How do you feel about websites that track crime in your neighborhood?
On the LA Times neigbhorhood overview, you can now track crimes reported in your area for the previous two months. They tell you when and where the crime occured. They also track murders in the LA area--giving you the victim's name and how they were killed. How do you feel about this? Will this actually just lead to more economic segregation? Or is it a useful tool?
I have some mixed feelings about this, but in general I think it's a good thing. In fact, I think it's good that prospective buyers can find this kind of information when considering a new neighborhood.
I also have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it's nice to be able to educate yourselves in an effort to try and stay safe. On the other hand, many crimes that get reported are committed at random and not likely to recur once the perps have been caught, or are committed between acquaintances and not like to affect the general public. In those cases, neighborhoods get a bad rep and eventually fall into disrepair and ruin, which is sad.
