    It's always a good idea to run a good anti virus application on the computer you use the to download the files.

    You can also upload files to virustotal.com to have them automatically analyzed by several virus scanners.

    Since many downloads from newsgroups contain keygens they are often flagged as false positives by many anti virus programs.  Most anti virus manufacturers flag keygens as badware in general although they may not necessarily be a virus.

    In my quest for finding software and movies on newsgroups, I found that when you go looking for the wrong thing like I did, Your going to run into viruses. I actually quit Giganews and decided it was not worth all the viruses with the programs I was looking for. You can't really tell which have viruses and which do not. I will say this, Avast ANti-Virus saved my rear end, because when a download was finished , it notified me that I had just downloaded a virus before I opened up the program. Hope this helps. I've never seen so many viruses, that is why in the first place I subscribed to the usenet.
